TOCCI'S TECH TOUCH

Tocci Building Corp third-gen CEO John Tocci tells us the company is using its BIM-packing virtual design on a variety of projects. A 60-person staff (including the VDC team of nine degreed architects, designers, and engineers) is working on: Alexandria's 2.5M SF life science complex in Cambridge; a makeover of the 450K SF Rodino federal office building in Newark; and a new cancer treatment pavilion in Marlborough. John says his VDC team collaborates closely with architects in a way not seen since H.H. Richardson and Orville Norcross created works like Trinity Church in Copley Square. (The 1870s for anyone keeping score.) John says that Richardson would design the exterior and Norcross? staff knew how to detail the brick, millwork, and interiors. The architect designed the intent and the builder designed the execution. Back then, John tells us, the architect produced 10 drawings, but today it's more like to 400.
We corralled some VDC and planning department members:Pierce Reynoldson, Michael Carroll, Courtney Pagani, Drew Dana, Raquel Perez, and Cale Montgomery. With tech tools in hand, and computer systems that are integrated with those of the architect, the Tocci VDC team moves into project architects? offices to understand their intent. John says working so closely means his people can help the design team find and prevent thousands of problems as they design and coordinate shop drawings.
Joe Ferolito and Joe Cavallaro are the type of project managers that round out Tocci teams. In general, Tocci acts as the consrtuction manager and builder. Still, project managers such as the two Joes (they should trademark that or at least start a band) use Tocci?s tek tools to efficiently translate virtual designs into physical realities.
