Pickleball-Based Social Club Moving Into Former DTLA Macy's

The Bloc In Downtown La

The empty Macy's store at The Bloc in Downtown Los Angeles is slated to become the home of a new social club.

Called Ballers, the club is expected to open next summer in the 100K SF former Macy's, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Ballers will offer 18 pickleball courts and four courts for padel, a doubles racket-based sport that is described as a mix of tennis and squash. It will also offer golf simulators, two soccer fields, a shop, two bars, a restaurant and a “recovery zone” with a sauna and cold plunge.

“[We wanted] to bring the country club to the city in an elevated, fun way,” Ballers CEO David Gutstadt told the LA Times.

Most of the facilities will be open to members and nonmembers. Nonmembers will pay an hourly rate, while members will pay a monthly fee with added perks, such as access to members-only locker rooms and special programming, according to the Ballers website.

When it opens, DTLA's Ballers will be the third location. The first is opening in 55K SF in Philadelphia this month, and a 30K SF location at Boston's Seaport is slated to open before the end of the year.

The founders plan to expand to 50 locations in the next decade, according to the LA Times. In June, Ballers closed on $20M of funding to help them do just that.

Ballers was founded by Gutstadt and Amanda Potter, both of urban design firm Good City Studio, alongside Daniel Bassichis of Vero Capital. Before Ballers, Gutstadt and Potter worked for fitness and hospitality brand Equinox as chief investment officer of hotels and director of planning, respectively.
