LA's Tallest Building Gets New Science Project

The US Bank Tower in Downtown LA has a new assignment, as the office is serving as a research laboratory. Scientists from the Natural History Museum of LA County are studying flying urban insects.

The month-long study, which is part of ongoing efforts to gain knowledge about LA’s insect biodiversity, will help entomologists understand the types of insects visiting or living in urban structures and why.

The researchers say they have no idea why insects would want to visit or live in such an unnatural spot 1,000 feet in the air. Launched in 2012, the project, called BioSCAN, has placed dozens of traps around the city and led to identification of 30 new insect species earlier this year. [KPCC]
