Building Permits For Housing Down Last Year

Downtown LA

LA's downtown boom has not lifted multifamily construction throughout the LA metro area the way it has some other sectors.

There were permits for 32,008 housing units last year, down 6% from 34,034 in 2015, KPCC reports. This marks the first decrease in the past six years.

The data includes information from the U.S. Census Bureau for the LA area, including Long Beach and Anaheim.

The lower housing numbers are helping contribute to Los Angeles County's housing crisis by driving down availability and driving up the cost of housing.
