Zoning Holding Back Development of Finkl Site

Ald. Brian Hopkins (2nd) wants his constituents to consider zoning alternatives at the former A. Finkl & Sons steel plant plant in the Clybourn Corridor. The site is one of the most sought-after properties for Chicago developers but the planned manufacturing district where it rests would need to be amended or repealed in order for zoning changes accommodating the retail, residential and/or mixed-use development that has transformed the Clybourn Corridor the past 20 years. Hopkins told WBEZ the PMD zoning “is almost like a set of handcuffs.”  One neighborhood group proposes setting aside 115 acres for residential development, while other residents are concerned more housing or retail will increase congestion in the area. Demolition of the remaining structures on the Finkl site is ongoing. [WBEZ]
