City Sports Closing Several DC-Area Locations

Sporting Goods retailer City Sports filed for bankruptcy protection last month in Delaware and will be closing 18 East Coast stores, including several DC-area locations.

The 30-year-old Boston-based company originally planned to close only eight locations but remain in business. Last week, the JV of Gordon Brothers and Hilco Merchant Resources received approval to conduct going-out-of-business sales at the remaining locations, GlobeSt reports. City Sports just opened a 10k SF store in Fairfax at 2920 District Ave in September, which will be among the area stores closing. Other DC-area locations of City Sports are at 1111 19th St NW, 715 7th St NW and 7121 Arlington Rd in Bethesda.

Liquidation sales began on Friday for City Sports, which was founded in 1983. Closing dates for the stores have not been revealed, but Gordon and Hilco noted that merchandise will be discounted up to 30%. Despite the bad news for City Sports, all is not gloomy for the DC retail market[GS]
