Jennifer Mazawey
Jennifer Mazawey, a Partner in the firm’s Newark, New Jersey office,
is a member of the Firm’s Commercial Real Estate & Redevelopment Law, Environmental Law, Construction Law & Litigation, Land Use & Approvals, and Education Law Practice Groups.
Ms. Mazawey practices in the areas of commercial real estate, land use and construction law. Ms. Mazawey is a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association’s Land Use Section, Environmental Section, Women in the Profession Section, and Renewable Energy, Cleantech and Climate Change Committee. She was named to the Board of Directors of the Land Use Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association in 2011. Ms. Mazawey serves on the Women’s leadership Committee of the New Jersey Women Lawyers Association; she is a Board member and Co-Director of Sponsorship for Commercial Real Estate Women of New Jersey (CREW-NJ) and a member of the national CREW Network. She was previously a trustee of the New Jersey Association of School Attorneys.
Ms. Mazawey represents developers in all aspects of their development projects. She regularly appears before planning boards and zoning boards of adjustment. In addition, Ms. Mazawey assists clients with permit acquisition from agencies such as the Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Transportation. She also assists clients with the drafting of their various professional services and construction contracts and represents clients in construction-related disputes. Ms. Mazawey also provides counseling
and training on all aspects of the development process.
Representative Matters:
• Obtain land use approvals for big box retail developments.
• Manage land use approvals for public and private utility clients.
• Has successfully represented developers in obtaining state governmental permits from
the Departments of Environmental Protection and Transportation.
• Represent developers in Construction Board of Appeals matters.
• Negotiate professional services and construction contracts on behalf of owners of large scale development project.
• Served as general counsel to boards of education and charter school boards of trustees.
• Successfully handled education and special education matters before NJ State
Administrative Courts and the Commissioner of Education.
For over a decade, Ms. Mazawey has also practiced in the area of education law. She served as both general counsel and special labor counsel to boards of education and boards of trustees throughout the state of New Jersey. In that capacity, she has handled matters at the Public Employment Relations Commission, as well as the Office of Administrative Law and state and federal courts. Among other things, she has counseled clients on matters of board governance, labor relations, special education matters and school construction.
She has lectured for the Institute of Continuing Education (ICLE), the New Jersey State Bar Association, the New Jersey Business and Industry Association and the New Jersey School Boards Association. In 2012, Ms. Mazawey was recognized by the New Jersey Law Journal as a New Leader of the Bar. From 2007 - 2013, Ms. Mazawey was recognized in New Jersey Monthly magazine by Super Lawyers as a New Jersey Rising Star in Education Law, Environmental Law, and Land Use Law. Ms. Mazawey has also been listed in the Best Lawyers in America in the area of Real Estate Law in 2015 and 2017 and was listed by NJBIZ as one of the 50 Best Woman in Business in 2016.
Ms. Mazawey is a co-author of “In the Election of 2002, the Voters of New Jersey Were the Winners,” for 27 Seton Hall Legislative Journal 77 in 2003.
She proudly serves as a member of the William Paterson University Foundation Board and the Greater Newark Holiday Fund Board.
She received her Juris Doctor degree, cum laude, from Seton Hall University School of Law in 1997, and her Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University in 1994. After law school, she served as Judicial Law Clerk to the Honorable Christine L. Miniman, J.S.C.
