Extell Applies to Raise Height of Controversial LES Luxe Waterfront Tower

Extell has filed an amendment to raise the height of luxury tower 250 South Street from 56 stories to 68 stories (800 feet), a move that would make it almost three times higher than the nearby Manhattan Bridge and the tallest buildings along that part of the East River waterfront. The developer initially had a permit to build a 68-story tower, but lowered its height to 56 stories in March. The Department of Building's website reveals that Extell received a permit for the 56-story tower last month, but a sign at the construction site heralds a 71-story building, DNAInfo reports. It was not clear why the new amendment was for 68 stories total, not 71. The new development has been a sticky issue for neighborhood residents since Extell bought the site in 2013 and demoed the existing Pathmark, taking away the neighborhood's supermarket. Residents worry the tower will stick out like a sore thumb amid a series of mid-rise buildings, the tallest of which is only 21 stories. Additionally, last month parts of Cherry Street caved in because of the construction. Community members will get to air their grievances in a July 29 meeting hosted by Community Board 3 and the Two Bridges Tenants Association. [DNA]
