No surprise here, but the Inglewood City Council has granted approval to the JV of Stan Kroenke, owner of the St. Louis Rams, and Stockbridge Capital Group to build a $2B football stadium. The proposal includes an 80,000-seat stadium and performance venue at the 238-acre Hollywood Park site, which Stockbridge owns. Stan bought an adjacent 60-acre parcel last year, which led many to speculate the NFL was coming back to LA.
But it's still a tale of not-so-fast for the massive project, as there are challengers from multiple avenues. First and foremost, Stan has to get the Rams out of St. Louis, which has unveiled a $900M proposal spearheaded by a team created by Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon. The project (above) would run 60 acres along the Mississippi River. The venue would also be capable of housing an MLS soccer franchise.
More recently, the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders announced a partnership to build a stadium in Carson, which we warned you about months ago. That $1.7B project could be nothing more than a bluff though, as both teams will continue to push for new stadiums in their current markets, but are eying the joint Carson plan as a backup if deals can't get done. Above is a look at the project, designed by MANICA Architecture. And then there's history. Let's face it, getting approval for a stadium is nothing new in LA. This is now the fourth major stadium proposal to begin working its way through the city process. Anschutz Entertainment has approval for its Farmers Field next to Staples Center, and Ed Roski (LA's wealthiest real estate mogul) has approval for a stadium in City of Industry.
