Hollywood's Mark Twain Hotel at 1622 N Wilcox Ave, which dates back to 1924, is undergoing a renovation to transform it into a more modern establishment.
The three-story building has primarily single-room occupancy. Its history includes housing people who had fallen on hard times over the decades, including famous animator Joe Barbera who once compared the building to a prison, according to Urbanize LA.
Hawkins Way Capital wants to change the perception of the place. The renovations will include exterior and interior improvements to modernize it and bring it up to building code.
As a result, it will have 62 guest rooms and a lobby with office space, a dining area and laundry facilities.
The new designs are taking their lead from photographs of the property from the 1930s, according to John Kaliski Architects. Plans are being made to refurbish the old Mark Twain Hotel sign that crowns the building. [ULA]
