Five Fast Facts About Boston Student Housing

Student housing is so important to the local economy that the City of Boston publishes an annual report about it. Ahead of our Boston Higher Ed & Student Housing event tomorrow (Oct. 20), here are five fast facts from the most recent report.

Who Has The Most Students?

Among Boston-area schools, BU has the largest enrollment: 32,554 in 2015. A close second is Northeastern U at 31,981.

How Many Students On/Off Campus?

47,589 students lived on-campus in Boston-area universities in the academic year 2015-16. That's up 940 from 2013-14. The number living off-campus in private housing: 83,395, with 34,604 in the City of Boston.

How Many Students Live At Home?

10,268 undergrads lived at home and commuted to school in 2015; 11,067 graduate students did so.

How Many New Beds?

1,187 new dormitory beds were permitted in 2015, a 140% increase over 2014 and a 289% increase over 2013. That also represents the second-highest number of dorm bed permits pulled since 2000.

What Are Boston 2030 Goals Re: Student Housing?

The Boston 2030 Plan aims to create 18,500 new student housing beds (16,000 for undergrads and 2,500 for graduates) by 2030, and reduce the number of undergraduates living off-campus by 50%, from 20,600 to 10,300.
