Boston’s first car-free condo development is officially open for business.

Boston Mayor Martin Walsh and Massachusetts Secretary of Transportation Stephanie Pollack joined Related Beal President Kimberly Stamler Thursday at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Lovejoy Wharf. The 15-story, 157-unit condo development has drawn attention since the then-Boston Redevelopment Authority (now the Boston Planning and Development Agency) approved it without any on-site parking.

The project’s original plans called for a 315-space garage, which also would have been used by employees at the neighboring Converse headquarters. Developers asked for permission to cancel the garage, as transportation demand could be met by nearby parking garages in the West End and North End as well as public transit at North Station.

Walsh's Go Boston 2030 plan envisions projects like Lovejoy as key to getting more cars off the road and encouraging residents to utilize public transportation.

Related Beal worked with Robert A.M. Stern Architects to make the property a gateway to downtown Boston and restore its portion of the Boston Harborwalk. The residences, ranging from studios to three-bedroom units, start at $750K.
