Atlanta is losing the headquarters of one of the country's largest data center operators.

Co-location operator Internap Corp. is shuffling its executive offices to Virginia, CEO Pete Aquino told investment analysts on a call on March 8.

“Going forward, Atlanta will continue to serve as local operations and staff headquarters, while our new official corporate headquarters [will] be located in INAP's western Virginia office,” Aquino said. “INAP's corporate headquarters will be a small core group in charge of capital allocation, strategic direction and external affairs.”

It was unclear how many square feet the deal will involve. Internap operates two data centers in Atlanta, including the 40K SF facility at the American Cancer Society Building at 250 Williams St. in Downtown Atlanta and a data center at 40 Perimeter Center East owned by Lincoln Rackhouse. Internap entered into a master lease for the facility, where Coca-Cola is a significant data center tenant.

Internap also exited two non-core data centers in Atlanta, Aquino said, but he did not specifically identify those locations on the call. The company does not list a Virginia office location on its website, where it still calls Atlanta its headquarters and lists offices in Boston, New York/New Jersey, Dallas and London, among other cities.

“Given two data center footprints with some attractive admin space in Atlanta, we’re able to relocate some employees downtown to our flagship data center, and other employees to our new suburban data center anchored by Coca-Cola,” Aquino said.
