University of Maryland Addresses Housing Shortage in Big Way

Placeholder

Just six years ago, The University of Maryland was all out of on-campus housing, and students were living miles away. Since, hundreds of millions of dollars have been invested in College Park’s Route 1. That includes the 517-bed University View II and The Landmark College Park. (The former, rendered above, is 850 beds and will house the region’s first Target Express, opening this fall.) Monument Realty is building Monument Village, a 235-unit apartment project, and adjacent to campus, the former Knox Boxes are being transformed into Terrapin Row, a 445-unit, seven-building student housing project.

Last month, the university purchased 0.8 acres from the Sigma Chi frat to build faculty and staff housing. UMD VP Carlo Colella says it’s a step towards creating a premier college town. The tract sits between on- and off-campus student housing. Meanwhile, a six-acre parcel just hit the market that could be built into a vibrant transit oriented development.
