Google Teaming Up With Nuclear Project Developer For 3 Sites

Nuclear developer Elementl Power said Wednesday it will partner with Google to set up three sites for advanced nuclear reactors.

Google, along with Meta and Amazon, have increasingly looked to nuclear power as they work to meet the massive energy needs of data centers

“Our collaboration with Elementl Power enhances our ability to move at the speed required to meet this moment of AI and American innovation,” Amanda Peterson Corio, global head of data center energy at Google, told CNBC.

The exact terms of the deal are private, but Google agreed to commit “early-stage development capital to the three projects,” including expenses such as permits, contract negotiations and other necessary precursors to construction, CNBC reported

“Innovative partnerships like this are necessary to mobilize the capital required to build new nuclear projects, which are critical to deliver safe, affordable and clean baseload power and help companies advance their long-term net zero goals,” Elementl Power Chairman and CEO Chris Colbert said in a Wednesday release announcing the venture.

Proposed locations weren't disclosed, but each reactor will create at least 600 megawatts of power capacity. Google will have the ability to buy the power once sites are operational.

Elementl Power is a 3-year-old nuclear power project developer and hasn’t yet built any projects, CNBC reported. The company has a goal of bringing more than 10 gigawatts online in the U.S. by 2035.
