Facebook To Expand Data Center In Sarpy County, Nebraska

Facebook said this week that it plans to expand its data center footprint in Sarpy County, Nebraska.

The social media giant is adding nearly 1M SF of data center space to its existing data center campus, which is located in Papillion. The planned expansion extends into nearby Springfield, and once complete, the facility will span 3.6M SF.

Facebook didn’t provide an expected completion date, but said in a post that the development will host “hundreds of construction workers on-site for years to come.” At its peak, the development will support 2,000 construction jobs, according to the company, as well as 300 permanent data center jobs.

The Springfield expansion adds another $400M of capital investment into the project, which amounts to $1.5B total, according to Facebook.

“All of us at Facebook are thankful for our partners and community members in Springfield, Papillion, and Sarpy County who have made it possible for us to continue to grow here in Nebraska,” the company said.

Facebook is rapidly expanding its data center footprint in the U.S. and elsewhere to support its ubiquitous family of social media apps, which include Instagram and WhatsApp.

In central Oregon, Facebook is planning a significant expansion of its massive Prineville data center campus.

That expansion will add two large new buildings totaling 900K SF, and once complete, that campus will total 4.6M SF and amount to $2B of total capital investment, according to the Portland Business Journal.
