Women continue to make strides in the commercial real estate industry. The C-suites of 100 of the largest CRE companies are 27.5% female, and firms are increasingly encouraging their female employees to participate in leadership development programs, conventions and other events designed to uplift women in CRE.

One such event is Bisnow’s Nashville Women Leading Real Estate Celebration and Cocktail event on Nov. 13, which is dedicated to recognizing the leaders and rising stars of the Nashville CRE scene who are making the city brighter. Register here for the event

Avison Young principal Jenna Muller has been nominated for Dealmaker of the Year, a designation given to local women who have made a significant contribution to one or more major deals in and around Nashville. Muller has represented clients in more than $1.4B in office transactions totaling 5M SF, and she told Bisnow she is honored to be named among the seven other nominees.

“Being recognized among such talented professionals is a reminder of how far we’ve come and how much opportunity there still is to lead and inspire,” Muller said.

Bisnow spoke with her to learn more about her career in CRE and what advice she has for others looking to follow in her footsteps.

Bisnow: What inspired you to pursue a career in the real estate industry?

Muller: I’ve always been drawn to real estate because it’s the intersection of business, strategy and the built environment. Commercial real estate offered a dynamic career path where I could combine financial skills with relationship-building and help shape the physical spaces where people work. The opportunity to make a lasting impact on communities and contribute to transformative projects inspired me to pursue this path. Having both my father and grandfather in commercial real estate, I’ve been around the industry my whole life.

Bisnow: What is the most impactful professional experience that has shaped your career path so far?

Muller: Starting my career in Washington, D.C., during the 2008 recession was a defining experience. The market was in turmoil, and I had to quickly learn how to navigate uncertainty, build trust and deliver value under pressure. That period taught me resilience, sharpened my instincts and laid the foundation for the client-first approach I carry with me today.

Bisnow: What are some of the challenges you've faced in the industry, and how have you worked to overcome them?

Muller: Relocating to Nashville in 2017 while having two incredible children and navigating the pandemic was one of the most challenging chapters of my career. I had to reestablish myself in a new market, build fresh relationships and adapt to shifting dynamics — all while balancing new motherhood. I overcame these challenges through persistence and a deep commitment to my clients.

The good news is that the office market is now clearly in the recovery phase of the cycle. With my new position at Avison Young, I’m well positioned to help my clients capitalize on the opportunity in the market.

Bisnow: How has Avison Young worked to empower women in CRE?

Muller: Joining Avison Young has been incredibly empowering. It is a true meritocracy where women can advance based on their talent and performance. I have absolutely loved working with Lisa Maki and the Avison Young Nashville team.

Bisnow: What does it mean for you to be nominated for Dealmaker of the Year?

Muller: It reflects the trust my clients place in me, the collaboration with my colleagues, and the strategic work that goes into every transaction. This recognition is especially meaningful because it celebrates not just volume but the creativity, persistence and relationships that drive successful deals. It’s a moment to reflect on the impact we’re making and to celebrate the future we’re helping to build.

Bisnow: What advice do you have for women looking to enter into or advance in CRE?

Muller: Your reputation is your most valuable asset. Protect it by acting with integrity, especially in tough situations. Don’t be afraid to ask for mentorship, speak up and define your own path. You can have a fulfilling career and personal life, but it takes intention and clarity. Align your choices with your values, and never stop learning.
