Mariachi Plaza Next to Gentrify?

Placeholder

Metro has plans to build about 120k SF of retail and medical office surrounding Mariachi Plaza in Boyle Heights, KPCC reports. The transportation body will seek public input on the project Thursday, which would completely change the face of the First and Boyle plaza, where street musicians have played for decades. KPCC says the plaza's name dates back to 1889, when mariachis hung out outside a donut shop near the old Boyle Hotel. There has not been much support for the project, and a Metro rep tells KPCC it might have to start over from scratch.
