Chula Vista's Sprawling Gaylord Pacific Resort And Convention Center Complex Opens
The massive $1.3B Gaylord Resort and Convention Center development is now complete in Chula Vista.
Seven miles away from Downtown San Diego, the 2M SF project features a 22-story hotel with 1,600 rooms, an 800K SF convention center, a nine-story parking structure, eateries and a waterpark, according to a release.
The complex was developed by Gaylord Hotels and Marriott International, in partnership with RIDA Development Corp. A joint venture between M.A. Mortenson and McCarthy Building Cos. handled construction.
"The Gaylord Pacific is just one of the major projects that we are doing," Chula Vista Mayor John McCann told San Diego's ABC 10 News. "South of that we are going to have a 35-acre bay project that is going to have housing, fine dining and also high-end retail. Then you will see the marina be upgraded... that whole area is going to be upgraded as well."
The revamp of a nearly 500K SF local retail hub about a mile away from the resort is also in the works.
The development was delivered in 34 months, but it has been in the works for far longer. In 2012, the California Coastal Commission approved the city's master plan to allow for this kind of development along the Bayfront, ABC 10 reported.
The Port of San Diego and the City of Chula Vista approved the agreement with Gaylord in 2018.
This is the first Gaylord Hotels property to open since 2018. The brand is part of the Marriott Bonvoy portfolio.
