As President & CEO of Life Science Washington (LSW), Marc sets the strategic direction, guides policy priorities, and directs business operations to ensure our members have the talent, investment, and partnerships needed to sustain the industry’s robust growth and solidify Washington state’s reputation as one of the top life science clusters in the nation. Marc also serves as the Chair of the Life Science Washington Institute, which is an affiliated non-profit focused on supporting life science entrepreneurs and growing start-up companies in Washington.

Before taking the helm as President & CEO, Marc served as Vice President, Public Policy & External Affairs for LSW. Prior to joining Life Science Washington, he served as Director of Policy & External Affairs for Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), where he was actively involved in creating and advocating for several statewide bioscience initiatives including the Life Sciences Discovery Fund. He was also deeply involved in a range of PNNL’s philanthropic science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education partnerships and science education initiatives. Prior to moving to Washington state, Marc held a variety of policy and consulting positions in Washington, D.C.

Marc has served on several gubernatorial task forces including the Washington Clean Energy Leadership Council and the Life Science & Global Health Advisory Council. His board service includes a number of statewide trade associations, including Washington Technology Industry Association (WTIA) and the Washington Clean Technology Alliance (WCTA).

Marc loves playing tennis, waterskiing, mountain biking, and Oregon Pinot Noir.

Alan Cantlin serves as a Principal for Trammell Crow Company’s Seattle office where his responsibilities include sourcing and executing new office development and investment opportunities with the team. With more than 20 years of commercial real estate experience, Mr. Cantlin has negotiated over 1 million square feet of commercial leases, approximately $100 million of construction contracts and overseen the disposition of over $550 million of commercial asset sales.

Prior to joining Trammell Crow Company, Mr. Cantlin served as a principal at Madison Development Group, a local real estate development company focused on retail and mixed-use projects. At Madison Mr. Cantlin was responsible for ground-up retail development projects across the U.S. as well as the Luna mixed-use project in West Seattle.

Prior to joining Madison, Mr. Cantlin was a Senior Investment Director at Schnitzer West where he focused on Eastside suburban office leasing and development. During his 10-year tenure, he negotiated more than 60 office leases totaling 1 million square feet and developed or re-developed four office projects totaling $280 million in cost.

Mr. Cantlin began his real estate career as an investment banking analyst in the real estate groups at Banc of America Securities in San Francisco and Merrill Lynch in New York City.

Dr. Will Canestaro is a venture capitalist, health economist and meta-epidemiologist with a demonstrated history of working in the biotechnology industry. He manages the Foundation’s biotech and engineering VC investment portfolio. Through WRF, Dr. Canestaro has made 25 investments in 19 Washington-based companies.

Dr. Canestaro also teaches courses at the UW School of Business and School of Pharmacy on Health Innovation and Meta-Analytic methods, respectively.

Dr. Canestaro earned his doctorate from the University of Washington’s School of Pharmacy Pharmaceutical Outcomes Research and Policy Program. He received an M.Sc. in medical anthropology from Oxford University and an A.B. in medical sociology from Dartmouth College.

Danielle M. McGuire AIA, DBIA is the Science Practice Director at Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, overseeing the firm’s diverse global portfolio of science and engineering projects. Danielle grew-up thinking she was destined for a career in the sciences and the only question was scale - studying gluons or hot jupiters. While at University, Danielle became fascinated with how the built environment tells the story of the people for whom the buildings were created and how in turn those buildings affect those people's lives.

After graduating with a Master of Architecture, Danielle worked on a wide variety of projects eventually finding her niche, combining her love of science and drive to create places to improve the lives of their inhabitants. Infinitely curious, Danielle focuses not just on understanding what is needed in research buildings today - but in working with her clients to project what will be needed in the ever changing world of discovery.

With over 30 years of experience, Danielle’s portfolio includes commercial, university and government research buildings. These projects are intentionally designed to be adaptable and grounded in creating research environments that are as much about the people who work in them as they are about the equipment they use.

Pete Warsinske joined Flinn Ferguson Cresa in 2023. Pete began his real estate career with CBRE, where he earned Rookie of the Year for the Northwest Region early on and Top Producer by Title for most quarters he spent with the company. Pete is focused on understanding the nuanced business objectives of his clients in the healthcare, biotechnology, and high technology verticals and translating those through the most flexible and capital efficient

real estate strategies.

Pete has advised and worked with prominent life science companies, venture capital organizations, major health systems, physician groups, and more – including Roche, Umoja Biopharma, Affini-T Therapeutics, HDTBio, Alpenglow Biosciences, Swedish, MultiCare Health

System, etc.

Pete graduated University of Washington with a degree in Finance while becoming involved in the startup life science and advanced technology community through his involvement with Life Science Washington, CoMotion and other industry associations. He is a student of the industry, often involved in continuing education courses, recently completing a certificate in Strategic Approaches to Drug &

Medical Device Development.

Jeff West (he, him, his) is Fred Hutch’s vice president of Facilities & Campus

Operations. West manages and provides overall leadership for Fred Hutch

operations in Facilities Planning& Administration, Facilities Engineering,

Environmental Health & Safety and General Operational Services.

West is responsible for developing, executing and monitoring strategic plans and

programs in operational areas reporting into him. He also advises the chief

administrative officer on matters relating to all areas of the organization in

support of the business goals and mission of Fred Hutch.

Before coming to Fred Hutch in 2022, West was the vice president of Real Estate

Strategy and Operations at Providence St. Joseph Health and oversaw the Real

Estate, Facilities, Construction and Environmental Services departments in

California. His work in real estate development and management has sent him up

and down the West Coast, from Portland, where he brought the country’s first

LEED Urban District online, to Southern California, where he integrated regional

real estate and construction teams for Providence into the broader health

system

Chris Angus joined Unico Properties with over 20 years of industry experience. His past responsibilities have included leading preconstruction efforts, supporting constructability analysis, systems selection and integration, sustainability, cost and scheduling feedback. He has worked on a variety of projects including commercial, educational, hospitality, institutional, non-profit and residential projects at all levels of design and construction.

Prior to joining our team, Chris worked with Sellen Construction overseeing Preconstruction Services. He has also worked for an international project management and cost control firm on a wide range of project types and sizes.

With over 20 years of professional experience, I have conducted a broad range of laboratory, programming, design and project management services for complex Biomedical, Bioscience, Teaching Science, Physical Science, and Animal facility projects for university, industry, and governmental clients. I have developed a detailed understanding of state-of-the-art laboratory design concepts and the resulting impact on the building’s systems. Developing laboratory facilities that respond to user needs, have longevity, and create an environment conductive to world-class research within client’s budgetary requirements are things I strive for in each of my projects. I am passionate about collaboratively working with scientists to understand how they perform their highly complex work and then help them translate that into a viable, dynamic and productive work environment. My project experience demonstrates the application of sound planning principles in the creation of productive, safe, reliable, and adaptive facilities, which enhance the quality of life within the laboratory, while developing collaborative research environments. I am an advocate for working within a multidisciplinary design process that utilizes Building Information Modeling (BIM) because it assures the integration of complex building systems and accommodates both people and material flow safely and efficiently.

I am involved with a range of organizations promoting forward thinking in the development of laboratories and higher education learning and research facilities including I2SL, SCUP, Tradeline, PKAL, SLCan, and Turnkey. Topics on which I have lectured include: Lab of the Future, Improving Outcomes through Flexible, Humanistic and Sustainable Solutions; Approaches to University Science Renovation Projects; Trends in Programming and Planning for Tomorrow’s Learning Environment; The Rationale for Vivarium Automation; Translational Research; and Flexible Lab Space using Innovative Modular Design.

Coriann (She/Her) is Lease Crutcher Lewis’s Director of Operations for Life Sciences. Bringing two-decades’ experience in the local market she leads teams on some of Lewis’ most complex, high-tech and high-sensitivity projects. She has built an impressive resume throughout her career, helping our region's most noteworthy Life Science Institutions and businesses build impactful spaces where life-changing research occurs.

Roger Heeringa’s skill and passion for the structural engineering profession is evident in some of the most prominent buildings in the country. From the W Hotel in Hollywood and the 63 story Independent Tower in Austin to the recently completed 929 Office Tower in Bellevue, his expertise is apparent is all building types. After having earned a B.S. and M.S. from Washington State University, Heeringa started working for the then start-up firm, DCI Engineers in 1989. After 28 years, Heeringa’s career has seen him advance from a Project Engineer to becoming the President and COO at DCI. His experience in the design of economic structures has earned him many loyal, repeat clients among contractors, architects, and developers. Heeringa’s dedication to the overall development of a community is evident in his interest and participation in several committees dedicated to providing insight and a globally progressive engineering community. As a member of ASCE, SEAW, The Masonry Society, and The Council on Tall Buildings & Urban Habitat, Heeringa remains committed to national growth and industry advancement. His dedication to the community extends beyond his role at DCI, serving as a board member for the Seattle-based non-profit Childhaven. During his time away from work he enjoys spending time with his family and you can often find him swinging a golf club or backpacking with his two sons.

Nick Lenington has spent over 25 years in commercial Real Estate development and

construction across multiple industries including the life science and technology sectors. He

began his career as a consulting engineer moving into corporate roles with Amgen and

Microsoft.  Today, Nick is a Senior Development Manager at Vulcan Real Estate focused on

project delivery from entitlements, through to design and construction.  Nick, a licensed

professional engineer, received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Washington

and an MBA from Seattle University.  Outside of work he and his wife Rachel have two

daughters and a large chocolate lab.  They enjoy spending time in the local mountains, San Juan

Islands, and traveling.

Shanna Braga joined ISB as Director of Facilities and Operations in 2021, and she manages ISB’s facility, real estate transactions, administrative and laboratory operations, environmental health and safety, and procurement.

Shanna has worked in the real estate field for 17 years, and has managed healthcare facilities with a focus on life science buildings with laboratory facilities. She was part of managing the construction and installation of a high-end operating room in 2019, and her experience includes managing several state-of-the-art buildings in Seattle’s South Lake Union and Fremont neighborhoods. She focused on asset management, lease administration, contract negotiations, budgeting, building systems, and project management.

Shanna’s professional focus is on laboratory facilities, tenant relationships, construction management, interpersonal skills, and she’s currently an active participation in Real Estate Marketing and Networking events. She’s been involved in Seattle BOMA, CREW, BISNOW, and is a Washington State Notary.

Shanna is born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. She has been married to her husband, Don, for 20 years. They are proud parents to two daughters, Katelynn and Madelynn. Their special fur baby is dog Casper who brings joy and love to their family.

Steve Brooks, President of UMC, brings his expertise as a mechanical engineer with over 24 years of experience to the forefront of the life sciences industry. Fueled by his unwavering passion, creativity, and curiosity related to design, building, and project efficiency, Steve constantly seeks innovative approaches to drive progress. Throughout his notable career, he has honed his skills primarily in the biotech design realm, spearheading more than 10,000 biotech renovation and retrofit projects. From the very start of his professional journey, Steve has been an integral part of the Fred Hutch Cancer Center, serving as a steadfast partner in designing and constructing their high-performance, cutting-edge life sciences facilities. His extensive involvement with Fred Hutch and other life sciences and biotech research centers has granted him a profound understanding of the industry's demands and complexities. Steve's expertise spans across various divisions of the UMC business, including engineering, special projects, major projects, industrial, and virtual construction/BIM. This comprehensive grasp of the design-build construction industry empowers him to navigate its intricacies and adapt to diverse challenges with ease. Driven by a strong belief in giving back, Steve is committed to sharing his vast knowledge with aspiring professionals. As a regular speaker at industry events and a guest instructor for both Washington State University's construction management program and Seattle University's mechanical engineering program, he imparts invaluable insights gained throughout his career. Steve holds a mechanical engineering degree from Seattle University and proudly hails from Spokane. Beyond his professional pursuits, he finds joy in his role as a devoted husband and father to two adorable daughters.

With 33 years in the design profession, Marc Oplinger is a seasoned project manager in both institutional and commercial projects. His portfolio includes life sciences, healthcare, corporate offices, mixed-use and educational facilities, from TI’s to urban redevelopment. An expert in project delivery from inception through construction, Marc’s emphasis is on inspired team leadership and collaboration. Marc has led the design of projects for a range of clients including RED Development, Vulcan Real Estate, and Alexandria Real Estate. He is currently overseeing design and entitlements on a Life Sciences Tower in South Lake Union and a Women’s Shelter co-development in Burien.

Passionate about people (not just the project), Marc focuses on all aspects of what makes environments vibrant and sustaining. He believes that focusing on human-centric solutions leads us to environments shaped for targeted and serendipitous experiences. For clients, he applies his keen understanding of complex relationships between building systems, design, and schedule to the need for agility and adaptability during all phases of project development.

Outside of work, Marc enjoys skiing, biking, and family vacations abroad. He’s also very committed to the design and construction of a primary school development in rural Tanzania.

With over 18 years of experience at McKinstry, Josh Osborn is an

accomplished industry expert with a focus within the life sciences sector.

He brings extensive proficiency in institutional and higher education

projects, as well as developer-led life science builds.

Josh incorporates McKinstry's core values into his work, infusing every

project with a focus on reducing waste and creating flexible lab

environments. By championing sustainable practices and staying up to

date with the ever-evolving building codes, Josh guides his clients toward

achieving their sustainability goals while remaining compliant with

regulations.

Throughout his career, Josh has collaborated notably with the Seattle

Children's Research Institute. His innovation in supporting their mission to

combat childhood illnesses has been integral. He is a highly respected

professional who combines years of experience and an authentic passion

for creating meaningful change. His commitment to McKinstry's vision

and his clients' success solidifies his position as a true leader.

Josh earned his bachelor’s of science degree in construction management

from the University of Washington.

Architect, artist, and Design Executive, Annette Jannotta has over 25 years of expertise collaborating with clients who are leaders in their industries and passionate about what they do. From Life Sciences, research, and higher education to hospitality and the arts, Annette helps her clients create places that invite people to thrive with ease. Through a collaborative process that magnifies empathy and imagination, she recognizes that how we work is just as important as where we work.

Annette’s award-winning projects weave together experiences, discoverable over time, that inspire engagement, ownership, and transformation of both the team working to create the space, as well as those able to use the final product. Annette is a licensed architect in California, an NCIDQ certified interior designer, LEED AP ID&C, and a member of IIDA.

Brian Surratt is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Greater Seattle Partners (GSP), a public/private partnership that advances inclusive economic growth and competitiveness for the Puget Sound region. The GSP team focuses on attracting new investment and talent, promoting international trade and growing existing industry clusters to create and sustain opportunity and prosperity for everyone in the Greater Seattle region.

Previously, Brian was a vice president of community relations in the Seattle office of Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc., the leading urban real estate investment trust focused on building collaborative life science and technology campuses in the nation’s most dynamic innovation centers. He also served in various economic development leadership roles during his time with the city of Seattle and oversaw efforts that spanned workforce development, manufacturing growth, foreign-direct investment and anti-displacement strategies. He negotiated the city’s $1.2 billion development agreement to build Climate Pledge Arena and served as the policy lead in Seattle’s historic efforts as the first major city in the United States to raise the minimum wage to $15 per hour.

Brian serves in a range of community leadership roles as well. He is a trustee for the Seattle Colleges District and commissioner for the Washington State Housing Finance Commission and serves on the boards for several prominent regional organizations, including FareStart, William D. Ruckelshaus Center, and the Seattle Center Foundation.

Megan has focused her career on the intersection of technology and social development. She is a leader in developing programs focused on human and planetary health with extensive experience building and directing complex technical projects in the energy, infrastructure, healthcare, agriculture, and conservation fields. In her career she has developed innovative technology for emerging markets and with a goal toward maximizing global impact. As the Vice President of WGHA, Megan brings a strong background in developing global relationships with NGOs, Industry, Government, Academia, and Multilateral organizations to deliver sustainable and positive social impact.

Prior to WGHA, Megan was a Portfolio Director for Global Good, a special collaboration between Bill Gates and Intellectual Ventures. While at Global Good, Megan directed a portfolio of technology development projects that included leading a team to develop a first-in-class model of the US Electrical Grid, a remotely deployable lung ultrasound system, super-donor assay, and a suite of initiatives geared toward supporting a circular economy. Additionally, she led Global Good’s collaborative efforts with multiple UN agencies to rapidly develop and deploy new products into developed and emerging markets.

Megan earned her master’s degree in Climate and Renewable Energy from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and subsequently managed two university technology centers aimed at developing food and fuel from photosynthetic sources and instructing a new generation of clean technology scientists and policy makers. Additionally, she has managed two separate research labs: a BSL3+ facility with a vivarium focused on kidney organogenesis; and a BSL 2 facility focused on indoor and outdoor algae cultivation for biofuel and food. She is passionate about creating positive social impact on a global scale.

Margaret McCormick, PhD, serves as executive director and chief operating officer of Benaroya Research Institute at Virginia Mason (BRI) and also as vice president of research for Virginia Mason Medical Center. Dr. McCormick joined BRI in 2017 and previously served as BRI’s chief administrative officer, with direct oversight of operational functions including human resources, finance, facilities and safety.

Over the past two decades, Dr. McCormick’s work has centered on launching, managing and investing in life science companies, frequently at the start-up level. Most recently, she served as CEO of Matrix Genetics, an industrial biotechnology company, spun out of Targeted Growth, Inc. Prior to that role, she held positions as chief operations officer at Targeted Growth, as a principal at Integra Ventures, as a consultant for McKinsey & Company and as Director of Business Development for the biomedical incubator and technology investment fund at Baylor College of Medicine.

Dr. McCormick received a PhD in biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Bachelor’s of Science from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Recently, she served as a trustee for both the Pacific Northwest Research Institute and the Life Science Discovery Fund Authority and is currently the Vice Chair and member of the Executive Committee of the Life Sciences Washington board.

Todd has over 30 years’ of experience in the building industry. Todd is a ‘native’ Seattleite as he moved to Seattle back in 1972 as the billboard, ‘The last one to leave Seattle turn off the lights?’ was situated along I-5.

Todd graduated with a B.S. in Construction Management from the University of Washington in 1989 and joined Sellen Construction as a Project Engineer. Over a 28-year career at Sellen, he oversaw many iconic projects in the Northwest including Swedish Issaquah, a 600K SF downtown highrise, UW Foster School of Business, Paccar Business School, and UW Medicine South Lake Union. Todd moved on from Sellen in 2017 and joined Urban Visions where he spent five-years and was an Executive Vice President overseeing a $2.0B portfolio of commercial real estate developments in Seattle. Most recently, Todd has joined McKinstry as a Senior Director of Operations.

As a longtime Seattle area resident, Todd enjoys many Northwest activities such as skiing, golf, fly fishing, and hiking. He spends a lot of time at his home in Suncadia with his wife and two children. And, of course, his best friends, Georgie and Wally (4-year and 2-year old Bernese Mountain dogs).

Rob is an architect and Principal with HOK, based in the San Francisco studio. As Regional Leader of Science and Technology, Rob oversees projects between San Francisco and Seattle in the private and public sector, ranging from tenant improvements to new ground-up speculative and build-to-suit R&D buildings to multi-acre corporate campuses. Clients include biotech and technology companies at every stage of growth from early venture-backed to multi-national Fortune 500s, as well as globally recognized academic research universities. Current projects include the 10x Genomics Operations Building in Pleasanton, The Freenome headquarters in Brisbane, Longfellow’s San Mateo Bay Center in San Mateo and Redwood LIFE in Redwood Shores, BioMed Realty’s Lincoln Centre Phase 2 in Foster City, and UC Berkeley’s Heathcock Hall Chemistry Research Building. Rob lives in Lafayette where you might find him on the sports fields with his 3 children when he’s not rooting for his Cal Bears, 49ers, Giants, or Warriors.

Scott is a Senior Development Manager with over 20 years of experience specializing in the development

of large mixed-use ecosystems with a focus on activated, transit-oriented, sustainable projects. Being a

lover of the outdoors coupled with a passion for urban spaces, Scott earned a bachelor’s degree in

Landscape Architecture from the University of Oregon as well as a Certificate in Commercial Real Estate

from the University of Washington. The Development field was a natural progression where he could

apply the knowledge and skills of bringing key stakeholders together with a focus on social impact,

sustainability, and great place-making to continue making a positive result to both the region and the

planet. To further these endeavors, Scott has also been active in the community as a member of the SW

Seattle Design Review Board, NAIOP, ULI, and the Belden Club.

As the founder and CEO of Urban Visions, Greg governs the strategy, direction, and value creation for the firm’s development portfolio. A fifth-generation Seattleite, Greg has over 30 years of industry experience and has formed more than 30 ventures with value in excess of $1.5 Billion. Notable past projects include Millennium Tower, 4th & Madison, 5th & Madison, 901 5th Avenue, and the Reedo Building. Current projects under design and construction include 200 Occidental, Second and Pike, Stadium East, and 888 2nd Ave. Prior to forming Urban Visions, Smith was a Principal of his father’s real estate property management firm, Martin Smith Inc., and the Founder/President of MSI’s development subsidiary, Martin Smith Development Corporation. A respected leader and frequent speaker in the community, Greg is embedded in the fabric of Seattle real estate. He is known for his strong engagement with key stakeholders as well as leadership roles in shaping land use and development patterns throughout key neighborhoods in Seattle. Greg currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Pacific North West chapter of the World Presidents Organization (Chapter Chair), and the University of Washington Foundation.
