Gary S. Kaplan, MD, FACP, FACMPE, FACPE, has served as chairman and CEO of Virginia Mason Health System in Seattle since 2000. He is also a practicing, board-certified internal medicine physician at Virginia Mason.

He is chair of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement Board of Directors and the chairman of the Lucian Leape Institute. He is also the immediate past chair of the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He was elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine in 2013.

Dr. Kaplan is also: (1) A founding member of Health CEOs for Health Reform. (2) A member of the National Patient Safety Foundation Board of Directors. (3) A member of the American Medical Association; American Medical Group Association; American Society of Professionals in Patient Safety; and the Medical Group Management Association. (4) A member of the Washington Healthcare Forum Board of Directors

Dr. Kaplan received a degree in medicine from the University Michigan Medical School. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP), the American College of Medical Practice Executives (FACMPE) and the American College of Physician Executives (FACPE).

With Dr. Kaplan’s leadership, in 2002 Virginia Mason became the first health system in the United States to adapt the principles of the Toyota Production System as its management methodology for identifying and eliminating waste, improving quality and safety, and controlling cost. Using tools and resources of the Virginia Mason Production System, Virginia Mason has earned international recognition for innovation, quality, safety and efficiency. In 2010, Virginia Mason was named a Top Hospital of the Decade by The Leapfrog Group, a national non-profit organization representing employers and other large purchasers of health care that are driving improvements in quality, safety and transparency.

Dr. Kaplan has been on Modern Healthcare magazine’s annual list of the “50 Most Influential Physician Executives and Leaders in Healthcare” for ten consecutive years. He is ranked No. 10 on the 2015 list.

Additionally, Dr. Kaplan is ranked No. 15 on Modern Healthcare magazine’s 2015 list of the “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare.”

Dr. David R. Flum was appointed as UW Medicine's Associate chief medical officer in December 2015. In his new position, Dr. Flum is responsible for initiatives that support UW Medicine as it aims to deliver the most patient-centered, effective and efficient care possible. He also leads a $30 million project from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation providing infrastructure, programs and training to clinicians and teams to deliver higher value healthcare.

Dr. Flum is a UW professor of surgery, pharmacy, and public health and an expert in measuring and improving healthcare outcomes. Previously, he developed and then led one of the first statewide collaboratives to improve surgical quality, linking surgeons from over 50 hospitals in the Surgical Care and Outcomes Assessment Program. In 2007 he developed the Comparative Effectiveness Research Translation network (CERTAIN), a diverse group of clinicians and hospitals that test the effectiveness of procedures and drugs. This includes the first U.S. study of antibiotics vs. appendectomy for the treatment of appendicitis, a comprehensive evaluation of patient reported outcomes in spine surgery, and research that aims to improve patient experiences across the spectrum of care including obesity, vascular disease, diabetes, diverticulitis and other conditions.

Dr Flum was born and raised in New York, and he trained at St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center in Manhattan. He was a staff surgeon in the Indian Health Service Navajo Nation, 1997-2000, and a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar, 2000-2002. He has led numerous national and international committees focused on the evaluation of health systems, patient experience in healthcare and innovations, including serving as Chair of the American College of Surgeons Research Committee. He is currently the Associate Chair for Research in the UW Department of Surgery.

As Director of Healthcare for B+H Advance Strategy, Lori leads efforts to create the next generation of environments to support talent attraction, retention and engagement in the midst of disruption. Combining her extensive healthcare background with B+H’s deep understanding of the needs of the changing workplace, her work seeks the points of leverage at the intersection of the physical environment and culture of care to empower providers, patients and caregivers through optimized experience design.

Lori is a seasoned leader, facilitator, strategic planner and healthcare architect. She specializes in guiding clients and multi-disciplinary teams to successful outcomes; uncovering clients’ greatest opportunities and challenges, analyzing complex data and applying strategic filters to identify the best possible solutions. Her diverse portfolio includes Strategic Facility Master Plans for large academic medical centers and small community hospitals, physical and operational Primary Care Prototypes for national healthcare providers, and programming and early planning for healthcare facilities. Lori’s projects span three continents, five countries, and a dozen US states with a total construction value of over $2B. Her favorite projects have involved clients in the midst of a merger or new partnership – the more complex the challenge, the better.

Bryan Croeni, AIA, MA, LEED AP is a Director and co-founder of B+H’s Seattle studio, the global hub for B+H’s Advance Strategy consulting practice. He leads change management and workplace strategy collaborations for diverse clients including the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children, Fred Hutch, OHSU (the recently opened Knight Cancer Research Building), Microsoft, Boeing, AstraZeneca, and Singapore-based engineering giant, Surbana Jurong. Over 35 years of practice, his focus has migrated from “bricks and mortar” considerations to human factors as the primary drivers of outcomes for organizations needing better solutions in an environment of continuous change.

A serial learner, Bryan holds a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Oregon, a Master of Architecture/Urban Design from UCLA and a Master of the Arts in Organizational Design from Seattle University.

Lois Broadway is an expert medical planner and technical architect with extensive experience working with healthcare owners. She is an advocate of effective communication and a champion of therapeutic environments achieved through a holistic design approach that draws upon all the senses to enrich a total mind, body and spiritual healing. Lois has a collaborative management style that brings design teams, consultants and owners together, maximizing the opportunity for a balance between design, budget and schedule conformance to meet the project’s objectives and goals.

Rhonda has been devoted to healthcare design solutions for over 20 years with clients from across the country. Beginning her career in Louisville, Kentucky, leading healthcare projects with such clients as Norton Healthcare and Children’s Hospitals across multiple states, she has become an expert in bringing together design, technology, and real estate to help clients deliver optimal care while achieving their business goals. Today, Rhonda is the Director of Workspace Consulting for OpenSquare, leading a specialized team and the strategic vision for the health and wellness division. She has consulted with nearly all major healthcare providers in the region, including Kaiser Permanente, Providence St. Joseph Health, Evergreen Healthcare, Swedish, Virginia Mason, UW Medical Center, and many others. She is also a trusted advisor for multiple healthcare best practice groups.

Whether large or small, Rhonda is passionate about helping clients to fulfill their goals by providing environments that support patients, families, and caregivers. As a leader in healthcare design Rhonda has a front line view of how technology, real estate, mergers and the execution of healthcare is changing communities and how people receive healthcare services.

Dr. Marc Miller joined The Polyclinic in 2016. Dr. Miller’s responsibilities include working closely with the board of directors, executive team, and strategy team to provide strategic leadership for the organization; partnering with the chief operating officer to optimize organizational performance and execution; and working with 240+ providers to promote physician leadership and support a positive physician culture.

At The Polyclinic Dr. Miller has helped develop vision, strategy, and tools for greater physician management capabilities, worked with the board and executive team on strategic assessment to chart the organization’s future direction, and put increased emphasis on physician accountability as part of the changing culture. He has a proven track record of leading teams through change, improving clinical outcomes while reducing costs, and has led product development and strategic management, and enterprise-wide medical management in a variety of settings.

Dr. Miller’s professional experience includes many years in senior operational and management roles at several health care and insurance organizations including Portfolio, SeriousComp, SeaBright Holdings, Inc., and FHP and Talbert Medical Management Corp. His background also includes experience with several start-up companies and others experiencing significant growth, and with a variety of reimbursement models and patient populations.

Dr. Miller is a Stanford-trained, board-certified preventive medicine physician and holds a master’s in public health from UCLA and a master’s in business administration from Golden Gate University. He currently serves on the board of directors of the Physician Care Alliance, a clinically integrated network with an accelerated growth strategy and investment funding from Premera Blue Cross, Physicians Insurance and The Polyclinic.

Thomas A. Kruse is the chief strategy, integration and innovation officer

for CHI Franciscan Health. In this role, he has accountability for system-

wide strategy and regional business development, strategic planning,

government affairs, marketing, communications and community relations,

clinical and operational integration, and bringing innovation to care

delivery and evolving customer expectations.

Before joining CHI Franciscan Health, Mr. Kruse was the executive vice

president and chief strategy officer at Hackensack University Health Network and Medical

Center where he oversaw regional network strategy, growth and development. He was also

Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer at Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton, Washington,

which is now part of CHI Franciscan Health. Previously, he led strategy functions at The

Methodist Hospitals in northwest Indiana, Sharp Healthcare in San Diego, California, and

Genesis Health System in Davenport, Iowa. Mr. Kruse received his Bachelor of Science in

Psychology and his Master’s in Healthcare Administration from St. Ambrose University in

Davenport, Iowa.

Ian G. Worden is the chief operating officer of CHI Franciscan Health. Worden is responsible for directing the operations of acute care services along with coordinating, integrating and growing these services in our communities while ensuring the delivery of cost-effective care.

Most recently, Worden led St. Vincent Health System, a 23 hospital system in Indiana, as its executive vice president/chief operations officer. As the COO of the largest health care system in Indiana, he drove the system from a financially struggling operation to the most profitable regional system in Ascension Health, the largest nonprofit health system in the U.S. Worden joined St. Vincent in 2000 as its senior vice president-Finance/chief operating officer. From 1995 to 2000, he was chief financial officer at PeaceHealth in Eugene, Oregon.

Worden received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Florida State University. He has a master’s in neuroscience and anatomy, a master’s in business and finance and a master’s in health services administration from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Ben leads strategy engagements with national governments, providers and the biotech community. For most of the last decade, he worked across Asia helping to address market access, technology incubation strategies, and regulatory reform for healthcare providers, pharma and medtech companies. He is a Senior Associate for International Health at the think tank NBR, where he works on questions around healthcare policy and innovation.

As a principal and project director at OAC Services, Derek oversees major capital projects for healthcare

and biomedical clients ranging from multimillion dollar new facilities to complete hospital system

upgrades. A recognized authority on project/construction management and owner’s representative

services in the medical construction market, Derek leads OAC’s specialized team of architects, engineers,

and construction managers on some of the most complex and most demanding projects. His 20+ years

of experience, coupled with his technical acumen and collaborative project management focus has given

him the opportunity to lead multi-year projects for Virginia Mason, the Benaroya Research Institute,

BioMed Realty, Mason General Hospital, Swedish Medical Center, and several other healthcare

institutions and biotech companies throughout the Pacific Northwest and California.

Kyle Raschkow has been in the construction industry since 1996 and brings expertise in healthcare construction. After earning a dual degree in Construction Management and Business Administration from Washington State University, he built a diverse portfolio of projects including healthcare, critical environments, corporate office, and retail facilities. Kyle believes in a project-first mentality and team accountability that allows our clients to depend on us.
