With the successful opening of the 18-story, 400-room Intercontinental San Diego in the rearview, many wondered if hotel development in San Diego County would slow. We’re here to tell you – the answer is “no.” Beyond those 400 rooms, 2018 saw a total 1,224 open in San Diego County – a 48% increase from 2017. Today, there are 19 hotels with 2,310 rooms under construction in the county.
To the North in Carlsbad, LEGOLAND opened a second Castle Hotel and has plans to expand the park in Spring 2020. Out East in El Cajon, Sycuan Casino Resort doubled down, investing $260M on a hotel expansion. In total, the region’s ten indian gaming properties are spending more than $1B on expansions and renovations.
In the heart of the city, Oceanside is seeing a pair of hotels (representing more than 500 rooms) go vertical while the historic downtown core is home to both new construction and adaptive reuse hospitality projects.
With so many projects underway, all signs point up for San Diego – a city that plays host to 38.5 million visitors annually, resulting in $11.B in annual spending – hospitality. Join Bisnow and your fellow San Diegans as we discuss continued growth in hospitality development, exploring the impact this investment has on the local economy, communities, and CRE.
