Ms. Jhaveri has twenty years of progressive leadership and management experience with a proven record of commitment to continuously improving the student experience, building strong relationships with faculty and campus partners, new construction and capital projects and food service operations. She began her career at Illinois State University as an Assistant Residence Hall Coordinator and moved up to be an Area Coordinator for University Housing Services. She then served as the Associate Director of Residence Life at California State University, Chico for five years. Ms. Jhaveri then moved to the University of Texas at Austin where she served as the Director of Residence Life for nearly four years as well as the Director, Business Services for one year. Her most recent position at the University of Texas at Austin was Executive Director of University Housing and Dining.

In each of these roles she has designed and delivered innovative programs and services, showed a relentless commitment to top notch facilities and technology, exemplified collaboration with various campus partners and built great teams.

Ms. Jhaveri holds a PhD in Education and Human Resource Studies from Colorado State University. She holds two master degrees; Master's in Business Administration from Illinois State University and Master's in English Literature from the University of Mumbai, Mumbai, India.

On behalf of the entire UC San Diego community, I want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank Mark Cunningham for his 38 years of dedicated service to UC San Diego. Mark's commitment to our students and to the academic enterprise at large has been unparalleled. Alex Leonard

Senior Director, Development

Greystar

Alex Leonard is a Senior Director of Development for Greystar Real Estate Partners. He is responsible for sourcing, coordinating, and executing project development for Greystar-owned projects in Southern California submarkets of the company’s Western region and is implementing the entitlements and construction of over 2,500 apartment homes worth over $1b in capitalized costs. Before joining Greystar in 2018, he was senior manager of development at AvalonBay Communities, where he delivered over 3,000 apartment homes, totaling over $1.2b in capitalized cost, in urban and suburban communities throughout Southern California. Alex holds a master’s degree in real estate from the University of San Diego and a bachelor’s degree in finance and sociology from the University of Nebraska. He is an active member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI). He serves as a board member for HomeAid San Diego, a non-profit dedicated to building multi-unit housing for San Diego’s temporarily homeless. Alex is an Academy of Magical Arts (the Magic Castle) Associate member. He also is furthering his education by pursuing a sommelier diploma from the Wine & Spirits Education Trust (WSET) and currently holds the Level 3 sommelier designation.

Eric Naslund, FAIA, a Principal and Partner at Studio E Architects, Eric Naslund has led the design on many of the firm’s award-winning projects, serving as Principal-in-Charge and designer on numerous affordable housing, student housing, urban infill and new community plans throughout the Southwestern United States. His work has been recognized with numerous national and international awards and appeared in publications worldwide. Mr. Naslund’s sensitivity to the design of humane places rooted in their location has helped earn the firm a reputation for an innovative, sustainable and people-focused architecture. Mr. Naslund became a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 2004. He speaks throughout the country on architecture and affordable housing and was the Kea Distinguished Professor at the University of Maryland in 2004 and 2008. Mr. Naslund served on the City of San Diego Planning Commission from 2006 until 2014, in addition to multiple community planning groups over the years. He has served as a jury member for multiple design awards throughout the United States.

Guy Carpino brings over 28 years of experience as a consulting electrical engineer. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering with a minor in Biomedical Engineering from Cal Poly Pomona. Guy is a licensed Professional Engineer in over 20 states and a Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD), certifying him as a qualified designer for technology systems.

Specializing in power systems, technology systems, and solar photovoltaic/renewable energy systems, Guy has led the successful completion of over 2,500 projects for a diverse range of high-profile clients such as General Atomics, NASA, JPL, Sony, Qualcomm, Intel, and Northrop Grumman. Known for his ability to manage complex, large-scale projects, he excels in overseeing BIM project implementation and coordinating multidisciplinary teams.

A dedicated contributor to the industry, Guy has served as an editor and ballot member for the ANSI/NETA ECS, MTS, and ATS standards. He is also the current Vice President and past President of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI). Guy shares his expertise as an instructor for NECA, AIA, and CBA courses and holds the distinction of IEEE Senior Member. Beyond his engineering achievements, Guy is a Level 2 Blacksmith.

Chris Sullivan

Sullivan, who is based in San Diego, has been with Sundt for seven years. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Design from San Diego State University, a Master’s Degree in Architecture from the New School of Architecture and Design, and a Juris Doctorate from the University of San Diego School of Law. Sullivan plays a vital role in many of Sundt’s impactful projects in Southern California, working with clients such as San Diego State University (SDSU) and the Los Angeles Department of Public Works. Additionally, he serves as the Legislative Chair of the Design-Build Industry Association (DBIA), Western Pacific Region (WPR), where he was instrumental in the passage of Senate Bill 956, which grants counties and cities in California the authority to utilize the Progressive Design Build Delivery system. In his free time, Sullivan enjoys spearfishing, free diving for lobster, and spending time with his wife and two children.

Joe von Meier approaches each client’s unique legal and business challenges from a proactive, problem-solving framework. Combining strong business acumen with sound legal judgment cultivated over nearly 20 years in practice, Joe's focus on construction and development across all segments of the commercial real estate sector has established him as a trusted partner for some of the country's top developers, investment groups and construction firms. By leveraging his command of all aspects of the development process – from entity formation and financing to construction, stabilization and disposition – he expertly guides his clients in complex real estate ventures involving investment fund creation, traditional and non-traditional debt, design and construction, and disposition of multifamily, office and warehouse/industrial assets.

Uniquely, Joe gained specialized practice in the areas of development and construction when he was retained shortly after law school by an upstart real estate development company in Chicago. Being integrated with his client's operations providing comprehensive legal and business counsel, Joe helped the company expand and grow from multi-million-dollar single-family projects to luxury adaptive reuse condominiums, which spawned architecturally significant multi-family towers and eventually led to the client's current focus on national award-winning student housing communities. Today, Joe utilizes his extensive legal toolbelt to draft and negotiate design and consulting agreements and construction contracts for developers and end users of recognizable commercial, industrial and
residential projects. His national practice emphasizes mixed-use developments and research and development facilities in urban centers. A versatile advisor to his clients, Joe also delivers strategic value and helping entrepreneurs raise equity from private investors by preparing Private Placement Memoranda, Limited Liability
Company Operating Agreements and ancillary formation and regulatory documents.

Prior to joining CGS3, Joe launched his career at Chicago-based Burke, Warren, MacKay & Serritella PC where he worked for nearly 15 years and rose to partner. During his tenure with Burke, Warren, he served as Chair of the Summer Associate Committee helping many top attorneys launch their careers. A member of a variety of top legal and real estate industry professional organizations, Joe has become a valued and respected member of San Diego's business community.

Mr. Schulz is the University Architect at San Diego State University, responsible for long range planning, real estate, design and construction for the university. He has overseen over $2.4 Billion in projects to date at SDSU.

Mr. Schulz brings to his position over 40 years experience in design and construction, and project oversight on more than $4 billion of public facilities.

He is a licensed architect and a senior building official in California. He has a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Ball State University, and Master of Architecture from Cal Poly Pomona, and is a proud husband, father, grandfather, and Aztec for Life.

As Director of Development for the Michaels Organization, Abbie Hawkins brings 10 years of experience in real estate entitlements, permitting, development, and financing for all asset classes including retail, hospitality, senior and student living, affordable and market rate multifamily housing projects throughout California and the western region. Abbie has responsibility for all aspects of development, and vast experience with CEQA, due diligence, entitlements, project design, and project management . Abbie received her Bachelors of Science in Real Estate from San Diego State University.

As a Principal for Gensler San Diego, Richard King leads work in Higher

Education across the Southwest with a focus on student life and student

housing. He has worked on seven University of California campuses, multiple

California State Universities, and community colleges and private colleges

across California. Experienced with broad idea-based design, balanced with

technical expertise for the detail and craft of buildings, Richard leads all

aspects of projects from concept through construction, ensuring the built work

serves to engage students and support the community. Richard is currently

leading the Evolve Student Housing project at San Diego State, as Principal-

in-Charge, driving the team to achieve affordability without compromising

quality. Richard is a long-time member of the AIA and USGBC and

participates with local schools in developing young professionals in

Architecture. Richard earned a Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies and

Art History from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Architecture from

the University of Pennsylvania.

David Senden

As part of the new generation of leadership at KTGY, David Senden is instrumental to the expansion and increased design profile of the firm. Mr. Senden specializes in urban infill residential and mixed-use developments, with work across the United States and internationally. In addition, he has a substantial portfolio of campus housing and specialty projects including affordable developments and recreation facilities. Since joining KTGY in early 2002, he has led teams in each of KTGY’s offices and often travels where needed to contribute to the firm’s most challenging design opportunities.

As member of KTGY’s Board of Directors, Mr. Senden is responsible for setting the big picture, strategic vision for the firm, increasing the firm’s profile and ensuring work at the highest levels. He was named to Building Design + Construction magazine’s list of the industry’s top 40 under 40 and has designed numerous award-winning projects from coast to coast.

Mr. Senden is a frequent speaker at various national and regional industry events and has written and contributed to countless articles touching on all aspects of design and the building industry. A lecturer and critic at several universities, Mr. Senden emphasizes the connection between the profession and the academy and values mentorship as key to developing talent and integrating the most current design thinking.

David McCullough

McCullough Landscape Architecture

A graduate of Cal Poly University, San Luis Obispo, David formed McCullough Landscape Architecture as a sole proprietorship in 1999 while consulting for another firm. After wife and partner, Catherine joined the business in 2001 and became Chief Executive Officer and President in 2002; the firm became a woman-owned corporation and a certified Small Business by the State of California.

With offices in San Diego and the Bay Area, McCullough creates spaces for hospitality, retail, mixed-use and institutional properties around the world. As principal landscape architect, David oversees all aspects of the design and production of firm projects at McCullough. He serves as head designer on all projects and maintains quality control on all work completed. Previous projects have earned awards and recognition in several national publications.

David finds time in his schedule to take leadership in creative organizations such as the the San Diego Architecture Foundation (SDAF) and the American Institute of Architects (AIA) local Urban Design Committee. He currently serves as Chair of the Pecha Kucha Night program, which is on its sixth successful year. He finds it inspiring to take part in such a diverse mix of creative minds while bringing them together to share with the public their wild ideas.

In addition, recently David was appointed by San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer to serve on the Historical Resources Board as Chair, which governs the identification, protection, retention and preservation of historical sites in San Diego. Concurrently, he has been invited to serve on the city’s Code Monitoring Team (CMT).

David’s design philosophy is centered around merging context and creative passion with grit, soul, and style. The firm takes every project with a uniquely creative approach that centers around diversity, discovery and conservation. David feels it’s important to engage the human spirit with nature, while expressing empathy.

Recent projects include a large waterfront development in Shanghai, China, Seaport San Diego redevelopment, several multifamily projects in Calgary and Vancouver, along with other notable hospitality, entertainment, and mixed-use collaborations in the Western US and Canada.

Notable Projects & Deals: 

UCSD - Current Projects /// Pepper Canyon East District: proposes to develop on a 20-acre site on the west campus adjacent to the Light Rail Transit station. The District would be built in multiple phases and would include new student beds to expand access to the benefits of below market on-campus housing. Pepper Canyon East District will remove the existing housing and build approximately 6,000 beds, a hotel, food and beverage, recreation, and amenity spaces. The first project, Master Plan and District Phase 1, is now going forward with pre-design to complete the District visioning. Once master planned, District Phase 1 would deliver up to 2,000 beds (1,000 net new) with associated amenities in summer 2029.

The Michaels Organization - City Village, San Diego Community College District (SDCCD): The new student housing project at San Diego Community College District (“SDCCD”) addresses the need for affordable student housing. City College is among the first community colleges to be selected for California’s Affordable Student Housing Program. The development will replace a vacant commercial building with a 7-story building of 281 units (794 beds). The community is planned to feature a laundry, grab-and-go store, a kitchen/lounge, study spaces, and a tutoring office. Ground floor amenities create an active street front and connection to the campus. A corner plaza continues the urban fabric of the adjacent corners. Incorporating green street practices (widening sidewalks, planting in setbacks, adding open space) along C Street and 16th contribute to a walkable community that connects to the adjacent campus. Program: Undergraduate Student Housing (794 beds | 281 units). Square Footage: 299,593 SF. Construction Type: Type III, Project Cost: $140M, Architect: TCA Architects, Contractor: CBG Building Company, Project Status: Concept Development, Financial Structure: Debt and Equity /// Presidio Terrace Redevelopment, UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO: This redevelopment project of on-campus student housing was awarded to Michaels Student Living in 2022 and is currently being designed for 700 beds serving undergraduate, graduate and law students at the University of San Diego. This redevelopment will create a new “Front Door” for the USD Campus by honoring the Spanish Renaissance architecture and the campus place making master plan with terraces and on grade open spaces that promote view opportunities, connection to the campus and opportunities for students to have places for both respite and social interactions with sustainable elements throughout the site and buildings /// 6010 El Cajon Boulevard. Located less than one mile from San Diego State University, 6010 El Cajon Project is a 235-unit mixed income project with Very Low, Low, Moderate and Market Rate Units. This project utilizes Complete Communities to redevelop the current under-utilized site. The project will feature modern amenities that are first in class in this up-and-coming community with innate traditional character on El Cajon Blvd. The carefree living and natural hues are designed to showcase the local charm while providing a calming environment for the future residents.

Greystar - Union Grantville: 250 unit, 615 bed, private off-campus student project serving mainly SDSU student that opened in Fall 2023 with a ground-lease with MTS.

Gensler - California State University Long Beach Parkside North Residence Hall: California State University Housing is located at the north edge of the campus and is part of the nearby Parkside Community. The building includes 3 stories with 428 beds, outdoor courtyards, and onsite community spaces. Increasing the number of beds and focusing on sustainability became the key drivers for the building. As a result, the University pursued LEED BD+C v4 Platinum, Zero Net Energy and Zero Net Water. /// Union Grantville Off-Campus Student Housing: Gensler provided Interior Design for the ground-up 248-unit Student Housing project adjacent to SanDiego State University and the Grantville TrolleyStation called Union Grantville. The design focuses on creating modern, comfortable, and efficient living spaces for students. Thoughtful incorporation of social spaces, wellness and fitness, study lounges and nooks, and collaborative spaces creates a harmonious balance between academic focus and personal inspiration.

Studio E - Victory at SDSU (completion in 2025): Off-campus student apartment building adjacent to San Diego State University. A mix of 3, 4, and 5-bedroom plans will provide a total of 226 beds in a six-story structure /// PLNU Master Plan (completed in 2024): This Campus Master Plan included four campuses in San Diego. Point Loma, Balboa, Mission Valley, and Liberty Station. Long-range strategic and academic plans addressed the University’s organizational and academic development.
