He holds a Master's in Real Estate Finance and Development from the University of San Diego and a Bachelor's in Finance from San Diego State University. Based at the La Jolla R&D Campus, Sanjay is the Vice President of Venture Investments at Johnson & Johnson Innovation – JJDC, Inc. developing new growth platforms for pharmaceutical, medical device, consumer and digital health sectors through the creation of innovative startup companies that will be incubated and then developed externally with the purpose of de-risking the technology/science/business model, leveraging external financing & capabilities, and accelerating the innovation to acquire or license back into the J&J sectors.

Prior to joining JJDC, Sanjay was Head of Johnson & Johnson Innovation – JLABS @ San Diego where he was responsible for the P&L, sourcing and onboarding of strategically relevant companies, portfolio prioritization, nurturing the regional ecosystem and fostering opportunities for partnership with JNJ. During his time with JLABS @ San Diego, critical deals were completed with companies such as 1859, Lynx Bio & Cidara Therapeutics.

Before that, Sanjay led R&D finance operations for the Janssen Pharmaceuticals R&D CFO. Prior to this role, he led early-stage R&D divestments in partnership with Janssen Business Development (JBD) and Johnson & Johnson Innovation – JJDC, Inc., leading to a number of successful asset out-licenses and the formation of four new companies.

Sanjay received his PhD in Pharmacology and MSc In Clinical Pharmacology from The University of Aberdeen, UK and attained his BSc in Applied Biology/Biomedical Sciences at Nottingham Trent University, UK. He completed post-doctoral fellowships at the University of Pittsburgh Medical School and at the Scripps Research Institute, where he worked in the lab of the late Nobel Laureate Gerald Edelman. He is also a Life Science Kauffman Fellow of Class 14, the holder of 40 US and 160 foreign issued patents and has 20 peer-reviewed publications.

Andrew Setikas serves as Chief Business Officer. Based in CLS’s South San Francisco office, Setikas leads all business development, membership and strategic alliance activities for the association. Setikas joins CLS from Thermo Fisher Scientific, the world leader in serving science, where he most recently served as Senior Director of Business Development, leading a group of corporate directors and teams focused on executive relationships, total company sales and collaborations with strategic academic, biotechnology and government accounts. Prior to his 12 years at Thermo Fisher, Setikas held numerous positions of increasing responsibility in the life sciences, including business development roles at Roquette Frères, Adhesives Research Inc, and FMC Corporation. Setikas holds a Masters of Business Administration in Management from the University of San Francisco, and Bachelor degrees in Chemistry and Environmental Sciences from Rutgers University.

Dina Uzri joined the dynamic and growing BioLabs team as the San Diego Site Director in October 2021. With firsthand experience as a biotech entrepreneur in San Diego and at BioLabs, Dina leverages this knowledge to help BioLabs residents reach their milestones, and she is an active promoter of life sciences innovation in SoCal. Prior to joining BioLabs, Dina spent three years at Hologic, where she held responsibilities in marketing analytics and commercial operations within the Diagnostics division. Dina was previously involved in business development for biomanufacturing and synthetic biology technologies at Viridos (formerly Synthetic Genomics). Earlier in her career, Dina was the first employee and COO at Abreos Biosciences, a startup in the precision drug monitoring space and one of the early residents at BioLabs San Diego. Dina has a B.S. in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Texas at Austin, a Ph.D. in Virology from Harvard Medical School, postdoctoral training from Stanford University School of Medicine, and an MBA from the Rady School of Management at UC San Diego.

His clients include universities, biopharmaceutical facilities, R&D laboratories, developers, aerospace facilities, and manufacturing groups. Enrique is passionate about the Life Sciences industry and its growth in the Greater Los Angeles Area and all of Southern California. He spearheaded the creation of the International Institute of Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL) in Los Angeles and serves as the chapter’s first president; he believes the life science community needs more platforms to network and collaborate. He was also named one of San Diego's Life Sciences top 50 professionals in 2022 and 2023.

With more than 25 years of architectural experience, Trevor brings expertise in the design and planning of interdisciplinary physical sciences and engineering environments, biocontainment laboratories, vivaria, cleanrooms, and biopharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. As a licensed Architect and a LEED Accredited Professional, he implements his experience in planning, interpreting, organizing, and managing projects through all phases of development, including establishing and monitoring budgets, managing the project team, and preparing schedules to ensure efficient utilization of resources. Trevor will focus on growing the firm’s life science client base and design expertise in research facilities throughout southern California. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of California, San Diego.

As McCarthy’s Executive Vice President in San Diego, Bob Betz leads an office that manages complex life science construction projects throughout San Diego County and the greater Southern California region.

Bob has more than 32 years of experience in the construction industry, having spent the past 28 of those with McCarthy. During this time, Bob has been instrumental in establishing McCarthy as a leading builder in the local life science industry, guiding the construction of several transformational projects including Aperture Del Mar, the Illumina i3 Campus, and UC San Diego’s Franklin Antonio Hall, among several others.

Bob is a born and raised Southern Californian, holding a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Cal State, Fullerton.

John Tocci serves a PCL Construction’s VDC Manager, lending his technical and VDC expertise to projects spanning throughout the firm’s Southern California Buildings District. Tocci started his career working in a variety of roles in his family construction business; his earliest experience was working in the field as a laborer and foreman. As he advanced, Tocci began to combine his work in construction with his interest in technology, progressing to the establishment and administration of technical VDC programs, including engineering studies, design charettes, constructability reviews and design enhancement recommendations. His project portfolio amounts to over $5B and includes a myriad of projects spanning the life sciences, R&D, manufacturing, tech, higher education and aviation markets with projects located across the globe ranging from speculative core/shell construction, interior build outs for Biotech startups, ground up R&D & production facilities, campus expansion planning, and 3rd party audits as an owners’ consultant. Tocci most recently has been working with Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), providing extensive VDC services for the $101B Consolidated Rent-A-Car facility, as well with UC San Diego to successfully deliver their recently completed Marine Conservation Lab facility. Tocci has a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Pepperdine University.
