Don is a nationally recognized expert in regional economic development,

with a wide variety of work experience at the local, regional, state and

national levels. With a unique blend of academic and practitioner

experience, Don’s work has focused on how regions can leverage and

complement their innovation institutions.

Lead roles in strategic economic development initiatives has been a hallmark of his career, from

serving a lead analyst on the statewide economic development strategy Investing In Pennsylvania’s

Future in 1987, through work on the Regional Economic Revitalization Initiative, and key roles in

the formation of Innovation Works in 1998, The Pittsburgh Digital greenhouse in 1999 and the Life

Sciences Greenhouse in 2000.

Don held the nationally unique role of VP of Economic Development for both Carnegie Mellon

University and the University of Pittsburgh – the first such collaboration between unaffiliated

universities to advance regional economic development.

In 2009 Don became RIDC’s 5th President and has led the reformation of RIDC to establish it as the

go to developer of real estate projects that support the public interest in Southwest Pennsylvania.

In Pittsburgh, Don is active in a number of boards and community activities, including serving as

Vice Chairman of the Redevelopment Authority of Allegheny County, Chair of the Greater Oakland

Keystone Innovation Zone and on the boards of NAIOP Pittsburgh, Idea Foundry, City Lab, and the

Steering Committee of the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance, as well as teaching in the Economic

Development curriculum at Carnegie Mellon.

Pamela Austin

McCaffery Interests

Pamela leads McCaffery interests’ Pittsburgh office. She is responsible for all aspects of the

Development process. She manages and coordinates both internal and external disciplines, including

architecture, construction, legal, leasing, marketing, finance, accounting, and is the face of the

Development to institutional partners, community members and government entities alike. Pamela has

been with the firm for 15 years.

Ms. Austin’s projects include The Morgan at Loyola Station, Flair Tower, Roosevelt Collection (all

Chicago), Lot 24 (Pittsburgh), and is currently leading the redevelopment of the Strip District’s Produce

Terminal and 1600 Smallman redevelopments. Pamela also serves as a development consultant to

Oxford Development. She recently completed the Yards at 3 Crossings and is currently collaborating on

a new residential development at 5765 Centre Avenue.

Prior to coming to McCaffery, Pamela ran a small business, redeveloped residential properties in

Chicago, and worked for a venture capitalist. Pamela has a B.S. in Biology from the University of Illinois-

Urbana, a M.S. in Biology from the University of Illinois-Chicago, and attended Harrington College of

Design in the Master’s program for Interior Design. Pamela is a licensed real estate broker in Illinois and

Pennsylvania, and is a LEED-AP BD +C.

Pamela is a resident of the Cork Factory and serves as the Secretary of Strip District Neighbors. She

enjoys hiking, camping, and biking the beautiful countryside of western PA with her partner Mike and

dog Gunther, exploring new restaurants around Pittsburgh, and is an avid world traveler.

Christopher Doerr, managing director, joined Walker & Dunlop Investment Sales group in November 2015. Mr. Doerr will be responsible for the origination and execution of investment sales and equity capital raise for multifamily assets in the Mid-Atlantic and will be based out of the Bethesda, Maryland office.

Prior to joining Walker & Dunlop, Mr. Doerr served as a senior managing director for five years at Cushman & Wakefield where he worked with the owners of institutional real estate providing disposition services for multifamily properties and land in the Washington, D.C. area as well as joint venture structuring, recapitalization, and equity placement. Before Cushman & Wakefield, Mr. Doerr was vice president of multifamily investments for Grubb & Ellis.

Since joining Trammell Crow Company’s Pittsburgh Development Team in 1998, James has been responsible for managing development and construction activities in Western Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio. Justin Ackerman is a shareholder in the Corporate & Commercial Group of Babst Calland. He uses a creative, yet

pragmatic, approach in his role as a trusted advisor to mid-sized corporations, closely-held companies,

family-owned businesses and their owners. Additionally, Mr. Ackerman leverages his experience and education to

provide a broad range of services including: general corporate representation, real estate services and transactions,

business succession techniques and dispute resolution.

Mr. Ackerman advises clients on aspects of corporate law such as choice and formation of entities, internal

governance, mergers and acquisitions, and the negotiation and drafting of contracts. His real estate practice involves

the purchase and sale of developed and undeveloped commercial property, commercial leases on behalf of landlords

and tenants, and property tax assessment appeals. Additionally, Mr. Ackerman represents condemnors in eminent

domain proceedings, including the defense of de facto taking claims, relative to right-of-way and total takings of

private property.

Corporate Experience

Prior to joining Babst Calland, Mr. Ackerman spent five years practicing corporate and real estate law in the

Pittsburgh office of a national law firm. Before practicing law, he worked as an auditor at Grant Thornton – an

international accounting firm. His past corporate experience also includes having provided financial, accounting and

marketing services to Johnson & Johnson, IBM and H.J. Heinz Company, respectively.

Background

Mr. Ackerman earned his J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and his M.B.A. from the Tepper

School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University in 2005. Additionally, he obtained his B.S. in Accounting from

the Pennsylvania State University in 1999.

Mr. Ackerman is a member of the Allegheny County and Pennsylvania Bar Associations and is licensed to practice

Marty Sweeney is Senior Vice President of Acquisitions and Asset Management for M & J

Wilkow, a Chicago-based commercial real estate investment and management firm.

Mr. Sweeney joined M & J Wilkow in 1989 and is responsible for capital sourcing, acquisitions

and dispositions as well as asset management for an expansive portfolio of office and retail

properties throughout the country. In his 28+ years in the commercial real estate industry, he

has been responsible for $1.5 billion of property acquisitions representing 10 million square feet

of office and retail space spanning the country from San Francisco, California down to Miami,

Florida.

Mr. Sweeney is responsible for M & J Wilkow’s growing national portfolio, which currently totals

3.5 million square feet in Pittsburgh and includes the iconic Waterfront Shopping Center, Plaza

at the Pointe Shopping Center in Robinson Township, Class A CBD office towers 11 and 20

Stanwix (also known as PNC Center), the 12-building 95-acre Penn Center East mixed-use

complex, 420 Boulevard of the Allies, 275 Apex (located in Southpointe), and the recently

acquired Miracle Mile Shopping Center in Monroeville. In addition to leading these acquisitions,

Mr. Sweeney also heads portfolio asset management, driving investor value through

repositioning and asset enhancement initiatives.

A member of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), National Association of

Office and Industrial Properties (NAIOP), and the Chicago Real Estate Council (CREC), Mr.

Sweeney is active in the commercial real estate community. Mr. Sweeney received a BS in

Finance from Illinois State University.

Under Brandon’s leadership, NK Architects has evolved to become a top firm in the country focused on high-performance, multifamily projects designed to zero energy and Passive House building standards. He leads a team charged with establishing an innovative development proforma that incorporates high performance building design techniques, tax credits, utility charges, and energy and maintenance cost savings to create a better building with a better return. He and his team have been honored with the 2014 AIA Housing Award for its design of the city of Seattle’s first certified Passive House; showcased in GreenBuilder Media for its design of “Home of the Year” award-winner, Stream Belmont; and named a Circle of Excellence member for its exceptional, forward-thinking approach to management and design.

Jeff Deitrick, Executive Vice President and Broker of Record for Oxford Realty Services, Inc., has 25 years of brokerage experience focusing on office leasing for major downtown and suburban office properties.

Jeff has participated in and closed over 800 transactions with a total value exceeding $500 million and exceeding 5 million square feet of space. He has worked with a wide variety of clientele through transactions such as tenant representation; agency leasing; lease negotiation; commercial sales; and build-to-suit economic analysis.

Since 2007, Jeff has been a member of the prestigious Society of Industrial and Office Realtors (SIOR), serving as President of the Western Pennsylvania Chapter in 2010-2011 and currently set to begin serving as Mid-Atlantic Regional Director for a 2-year term (2017-2018).

Jeffrey is a graduate of Kent State University, where he earned a BA in Real Estate.

Chris oversees legal affairs and human resources at Schell Games. He is responsible for developing relationships with our partners, such as Games For Change, Amplify, The Fred Rogers Company, Yale University and Walt Disney Imagineering. He also handles dispute resolution, intellectual property licensing, and corporate governance.

Prior to joining Schell Games, Chris worked as Operations Counsel at Mylan, a leading generics and specialty pharmaceutical company, General Counsel and Director of HR at Guru.com, a global talent marketplace, and Corporate Associate at Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney, one of the nation’s leading law firms.

Chris received a bachelor’s degree from Allegheny College and a J.D. from University of Pittsburgh focusing on technology and intellectual property law.

Outside of work, Chris volunteers with Big Brothers and Big Sisters in the Mentor 2.0 program. He lives in Allison Park, PA with his wife, Stephanie, and two daughters, Carmella and Charlotte.

Andrew Miller

Andrew Miller is a First Vice President within CBRE’s Brokerage Group, with a primary focus on leasing office space in and around Pittsburgh's Central Business District and a specialty of working with technology firms. Currently, Mr. Miller represents over 4.5 million square feet of office space for lease, including several high-profile Class 'A' office towers and active development projects. While primarily engaged in landlord representation, Andrew also works with tenants and sellers to achieve their real estate related objectives.

In ten years at CBRE, Mr. Miller has successfully closed over 4.7 million square feet of commercial real estate transactions.

Andrew was honored by the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Society of Industrial and Office Realtors for completing the Office Lease of the Year Urban (Non-CBD) in 2011, Most Creative Deal of the Year in 2008 and 2010, the Suburban Office Lease of the Year in 2008, and the Most Adaptive Re-Use of the Year in 2009. He has also been recognized multiple times as a Pittsburgh Power Broker by the CoStar Group, awarded to the top brokers in the market based on leasing transaction volume. His closed transactions were recognized by the Pittsburgh Business Times in their list of the top 25 office leases in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2014.

Prior to joining CBRE, Mr. Miller worked as a Sales Advisor with Oddbins, and prior to that for S&T Bank in their Commercial Lending & Marketing Departments.

Mr. Altman specializes in counseling companies and individuals on a broad range of transactional matters, and has particular expertise in representing companies in connection with M&A activity, and owners/investor groups in connection with the acquisition, funding, operations and disposition of professional sports teams and commercial real estate. Mr. Altman has also been selected by Super Lawyers Magazine as “Pennsylvania Rising Star” for Mergers and Acquisitions from 2014 through 2020.
