Baublebar

Daniella Yacobovsky is a co-founder of BaubleBar, the first fashion jewelry brand to disrupt the industry and

redefine how women shop for accessories. Coming from a decidedly less-glitzy background in banking,

Daniella and her best friend (and future co-founder) Amy Jain enrolled in Harvard Business School, where they

would ultimately conceive the idea for BaubleBar while working on a project their second year there. Upon

launching in 2011, the pair quickly realized BaubleBar cornered a niche in the $22-billion-dollar jewelry industry

as the first go-to fashion jewelry brand offering unparalleled selection and style guidance, all at a guilt-free price

point.

Today, Daniella and Amy both remain at the helm of BaubleBar, leveraging their individual strengths and

growing the business through a symbiotic partnership. In five short years, Daniella has helped scale the

business, now amassing over 1,500 orders per day, one million monthly site visitors and a range of impressive

brand, retail and celebrity collaborations. Additionally, Daniella has aided in the brand’s seamless expansion

into brick-and-mortar retail through pop up stores and partnerships with large retailers such as Target,

Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s and Anthropologie. Using her keen eye for design and grasp on fashion’s ever-

changing trends, Daniella spearheads all of BaubleBar’s creative, overseeing everything from the product

design and digital marketing to the brand’s original content and social footprint.

When Daniella’s not at work analyzing fashion trends to gauge what will take off next, she can be found

cooking at home and hosting dinner parties with friends. She’s also an avid traveler, always planning her next

getaway.

Daniella holds a B.S. from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in business

administration from Harvard Business School.

14 Year Investment Banker, MBS Sales & Trading with analytics specialty; Founder of Saintly Bags, customizable weekenders and leather goods.

Sam is the owner and founder of Consortium and Saintly Bags. After graduating from UCLA in 2001 with a B.S. in Physiological Sciences and a Business Specialization, he moved to New York for a career in finance. Over 14 years, Sam built a successful career in Mortgage and Asset Backed Securities at notable investment banks such as Bear Stearns and Royal Bank of Scotland.

An avid traveler, Sam constantly sought out the perfect travel bag for his frequent weekend trips. It was a 2012 trip to SE Asia that gave him the idea to design his own bag, and then bring that customization to the masses through Saintly Bags.

While building Saintly, he discovered an even deeper disconnect in the marketplace: customizable fashion and lifestyle products could not be sold through retailers and digital marketplaces. Consortium was born.

Summary

Retail generated a record high $5.7 trillion sales in 2017, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, making another strong year with annual sales growth of 4.4% year-over-year. However, consumers also turned their dollars towards e-commerce, spending  $453.46 billion online in 2017, a 16% increase from the previous year which represents 13% of total retail sales and nearly half of its growth.

But cities still saw thousands of stores close in 2017 and plenty of brick-and-mortar business scaled back their locations. E-commerce is forcing companies to rethink their business model in order to keep up with the internet's giants and consumer demands. The industry's feelings on the future of retail is mixed, but retailers see signs for hope as they look for ways to reinvigorate their marketplaces.

As vacant storefronts blight communities, cities and landlords are searching for solutions that will fill those spaces, whether through punitive fees on the owners of vacant sites or through creative approaches, such as pop-ups or new lease terms.

Despite having all the key ingredients to a retail boom - high consumer confidence, low unemployment, and strong economic growth, Bloomberg reported that the Retail Apocalypse is still to come. The future of the industry hangs in balance, but newcomers and mainstays alike are looking to innovate and disrupt the trends that plague them.

We will be exploring key themes such as:

1) Who are anchors of the future?

2) How have retailers transformed from brick-and-mortar to omni-channel retailers, and what does this mean for their landlords?

3) What does the debt burden on many retail chains mean for the future of the industry, and how will financing challenges be addressed for struggling retailers?

4) What are REIT leaders advising for investment strategies with the current state of retail?

5) What is beyond the 'Amazon Effect' in retail and e-commerce? Who else is innovating, and what direction will the sector head in?
