Walter Akers

Associate Professor and Research Director, Department

UT Southwestern Medical Center

My research combines my education and experience as veterinarian and biomedical engineer to combat

cancer and other diseases through developing novel preclinical and translational molecular imaging

approaches and improve our ability to diagnose, stage and treat cancer and other highly destructive diseases.

Utilizing my expertise in animal physiology and biomedical imaging, I have developed expertise and techniques

to study pharmacological profiles and tumor-selective contrast enhancement achieved with small molecule and

nanoparticle-based agents. As a faculty member in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the UT

Southwestern Medical Center, I work to advance translation of fluorescence guided surgery and depth-

independent phototherapy. I envision these tools eradicating cancer through real time augmented reality in the

operating room and engineered constructs that activate the immune system to eliminate metastatic disease.

Director, Proj. Accelerator Transition Innov. Office

ARPA-H

Craig Gravitz, Director, Project Accelerator Transition Innovation Office (PATIO), ARPA-H

Craig Gravitz is designing and implementing the transition and commercial strategy for the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H). Prior to joining ARPA-H, Mr. Gravitz launched and ran a research and development program at the Defense Logistics Agency. That program was inspired by DARPA, but also by private sector innovation models like design thinking and lean start up. Using those models, he developed an effective framework to translate work into real world environments: real people used those innovations. He is a licensed attorney and has previously serviced as a contracting officer.
