Kelly became Head of Real Estate and Investment at British Land last year, and has overall responsibility for asset management, leasing and investment across the business. Kelly has been at British Land since 2011, with roles in corporate finance and heading up strategy, and has been Head of Investment since 2016. She joined the Executive Committee in November 2020. Kelly is a Chartered Accountant, having qualified in New Zealand in 2001 at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and has worked in real estate in the UK since 2004.

Kelly is also a Non-Executive Director at Sirius Real Estate, the FTSE250 owner and operator of business parks, offices and mixed use workspace.

Mr. Miller joined the firm in 2014 and is a member of the firm’s Management Committee. As Head of the European Transactions group, he oversees sourcing and management of investments and relationships with operating partners. In addition, he is responsible for the development of the European Transactions team and investment strategies.

Prior to joining Harrison Street, Mr. Miller was a Vice President in the investments group at Equity International, a real estate private equity firm investing in operating companies in international emerging markets. While there, his responsibilities included origination, execution, and management of the firm’s investments, and he was actively involved with and served on the Board of Directors for various portfolio companies. Previously, he worked as an associate at Paul Capital Partners, where his role included due diligence, financial analysis, and transaction execution efforts for leveraged buyout and growth equity investments across a wide range of industries. Mr. Miller began his career as an investment banking analyst in Credit Suisse’s Global Energy group, where he worked on leveraged buyouts, mergers and acquisitions, restructurings, and financings in the energy sector.

Mr. Miller graduated with a BA from Vanderbilt University, majoring in mathematics and economics, and he earned an MBA from The University of Chicago Booth School of Business with concentrations in finance and economics.

Toby has been with BioCity since 2011 and had a number of roles before becoming CEO at the beginning of 2019. Toby is recognised as a leader in the use of ‘lean start-up’ methodologies to support early stage opportunities in life sciences and healthcare. He has been a driving force behind the shaping and systemization of the acceleration and incubation activities at BioCity, as well as directly overseeing the growth of the property side of the business. He is passionate about supporting start-up companies and creating vibrant innovation ecosystems.

Michael Chen is the Chief Executive Officer of Nuclera. In 2013, while working on his PhD Michael and his co-founders became frustrated by the inaccessibility of proteins to support everything from basic research to drug discovery. This prompted a mission, to make proteins more accessible to everyone. Over the past 10 years, Michael has led the company in raising multiple funding rounds totaling $83M, building a team of 100+ strong over 2 continents and driving the business and commercial strategy behind bringing our pioneer rapid protein prototyping technology to market. In his spare time Michael likes to explore different cultures, be that traveling, visiting museums, or attending art exhibits. One of his favorite exhibitions is in the Whipple Museum of the History of Science whose exhibits chart the progress of scientific tools and instruments over the last century. Michael holds a BSc in Chemistry from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a PhD in Chemistry from the National Institutes of Health and University of Cambridge, where he met his co-founders Gordon McInroy and Jiahao Huang.

Thomas Renn

Mr. Renn is the Vice President of Acquisitions and Development, Europe at Breakthrough Properties. Mr. Renn supports the firm’s expansion across key European life science markets. An experienced veteran in the development of life sciences spaces, Mr. Renn was previously Managing Director at Bruntwood SciTech where his portfolio included Manchester Science Park, Citylabs, Circle Square and the £1.5bn ID Manchester re-development project. Mr. Renn’s extensive knowledge of the life sciences sector enabled him to lead the successful growth of the firm’s Manchester-based projects through a strategic combination of development and acquisition. Prior to Bruntwood, Mr. Renn held leadership positions at Manchester Science Partnerships.

Mr. Renn has also held positions with several industry organizations, including board posts on The Oxford Road Corridor and The Manchester China Forum. He was also a member of the Industry Advisory Board for the Ada National Digital Skills College. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Commercial Management & Quantity Surveying from The University of Manchester.

Monika Zemla

Director - Leasing and Business Development

Specialising in Business Development and Leasing, focussed on leasing, asset management, cluster engagement and the expansion of the Advanced Research Clusters Platform across Europe. As one of the first employees of the former Harwell Campus Management team (working for Public: Private Sector Joint Venture), Monika has played a significant role in growing and shaping the business. An early achievement saw her establishing and managing the complex process of land acquisition into the Partnership from the Public Sector freeholder. Monika became specialised in the due diligence process as well as taking a role of advising the bank on development potential and valuations of existing and newly completed assets throughout the expansion of the campus up to the most recently raised senior debt of £110million. In 2020, alongside the Harwell Oxford Partners and Eastdil, Monika overseen the sale of 50% private stake of the Harwell’s Joint Venture and the Harwell Oxford Management Company (now known by Advanced Research Cluster Management) to Brookfield Asset Management which included Business Plan creation, investors engagement, legals and full suite of due diligence. Monika’s roles involves leading negotiations on numerous commercial lettings of multi- and single-let schemes, with over 170k sf completed leasing throughout 2021 only, advise on the strategic land management and development of further 1.5 million sq ft of commercial spaces with particular focus on laboratories, offices and advanced manufacturing, as part of the wider Campus Team, promoting and growing Business Clusters on Campus: Space, EnergyTech, HealthTech, and Quantum, working with Head of Acquisitions to identity international opportunities to expand Advanced Research Clusters outreach and network for the benefit of its members. Monika is a Member of Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, having qualified in Planning and Development and graduated from Oxford Brookes University where she was awarded the accolade of Best Academic Performance for her BA. She was also recognised by the Futures Award of the Year (Young Person under 35) – Winner, Issued by UK Property Forums in September 2020. Before joining Harwell Team in 2014, Monika worked in Local Planning Authorities in West Oxfordshire, Witney and Chipping Norton.

Rob Burborough is a partner at 3PM with over 25 years in the science and technology sector. He is a specialist in this sector, and has led projects from all science backgrounds. Rob has collaborated extensively with science park owners in the UK and USA (including Discovery Park, Sandwich; The Oxford Science Park, Oxford; Granta Park, Great Abington; Babraham Institute, Babraham; Biomed, Granta Park, Cambridge; Chesterford Research Park, Saffron Walden).

More recently, Rob has been engaged by several organisations to advise at a strategic business case and operational execution level for private companies in respect of the investment opportunities, governance and execution strategies, and ecosystem formation for investment and future growth potential. He has been engaged to act as strategic advisor in support of the operational execution of the growth plans of venture-capital-funded private companies in the pre-revenue commercial science sector as they move from a new-company to a mature business model.

Rob has been appointed as expert panel advisor to the ISCF (Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund), focusing on core innovation and energy-efficient buildings, and is considered an industry expert in the project, programme and portfolio management of complex science and technology projects throughout the UK and globally.

Rob continues to work very closely with the UK research councils (including UK Research and Innovation, Innovate UK and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council).

As Chief Executive Officer of Europe, based in London, Paul leads the expansion of Harrison Street’s European strategies and is responsible for overseeing and growing the Firm’s team of professionals across the UK and Europe. Prior to joining Harrison Street, Paul was most recently President and Chief Operating Officer at Round Hill Capital, a real estate investment and asset management firm with a global footprint. While at Round Hill Capital, he managed a business with a $8+ billion portfolio as well as a team of 260 people across 15 offices in 14 countries. He has overseen investment and development projects, regulatory approvals, complex refinancings and capital raises in multiple European locations across a wide array of real estate asset sectors including retail, commercial, residential and student housing. Prior to joining Round Hill, Paul served as a Partner at Aggmore Group, where he was responsible for raising and deploying over €500 million of new capital and developed JV partnerships with European operators in the residential and commercial real estate space. Earlier he served as Chief Operating Officer at North Bridge Capital Partners Ltd. he began his career at KPMG LLP as a senior manager in the transaction services department. Paul earned a BA in Accounting and Financial Analysis from Newcastle University. he is ACA qualified and is a member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.
