Dennis Murphree is the Managing Partner of Murphree Venture Partners (venture capital funds); The Southern Funds Group (venture capital and private equity partnerships); Murphree and Company (commercial real estate development); and is a partner in an MBE real estate development firm, Paul Alexander Company. He got his BA in Economics from Southern Methodist University and his MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Upon graduation from Wharton, he entered the real estate industry in May 1971 and started his own firm, The Murphree Company, in December 1972. By 1985, that firm was the 11th largest commercial developer in the U.S. and did $600 million in new construction that year throughout 13 cities.

In 1975, Dennis began doing venture capital deals as well, starting with 8 commercial bank start-ups between 1975 and 1980. By 1986, he had done 23 VC deals including the restaurants Cafe Annie and Cafe Express. In late 1986, he sold his real estate operations and began VC work full time in January 1987. Over the years, his firm has financed 109 portfolio companies through 7 venture capital funds and over 20 separate partnerships.

In 2013, he re-entered the real estate field with Murphree and Company and is developing numerous commercial projects throughout the Houston region including the 15 story office tower, 1885 St. James Place, which was completed in May 2016. He did that building with his former partner, Dennis W. Nelson and their two sons. He continues to do venture capital through The Southern Funds Group with his business partner, John D. White.

Dennis is a 32 year professor and taught "Investment Management" to seniors at the University of St. Thomas for six years. For the last 26 years he has been on the faculty of the Jones Graduate School at Rice University where he teaches two second year MBA courses: "Creative Entrepreneurship" and "Venture Capital". Dennis Nelson

President & CEO

The Mission Companies

Dennis W. Nelson is currently the president and C. E. O. of Mission Management Company, Mission

Asset Marketing, and Mission Equities GP, LLC. Collectively these companies operate as The Mission

Companies. He founded this group of companies in October 1986 to provide an array of real estate

services to a diversified list of property owners. Commercial property management services are provided

to owners of office buildings, retail centers, medical facilities, and industrial properties by Mission

Management Company. Mission Asset Marketing, Inc., handles leasing and brokerage services for

property owners, as well as tenants needing assistance in their corporate relocations. Mission Equities

GP, LLC provides development and acquisition services for investors looking to develop, acquire or

dispose of income producing properties. The majority of the companies' efforts over the last twenty years

have included the acquisition and development of projects for their own account.

Dennis graduated from The University of Texas in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil

Engineering. In 1974 he received a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. Immediately following

graduation, he went to work for Fish Engineering and Construction Company, as a construction engineer.

He was assigned to the construction division of the company assisting in the construction of

petrochemical refineries for companies like Hunt Oil, Phillips Petroleum and Shell Oil.

In 1977, he was recruited by Dennis Murphree to enter the commercial real estate industry with The

Murphree Company, where he rose to become Region Partner in charge of all development projects in

Houston and South Texas. Responsibilities included site selection, economic feasibility, procurement of

anchor tenants, financing, design, construction and on-going management and leasing of all projects

acquired and/or developed by the company in the southern region of Texas. During that period, the

company grew from a small Houston-based real estate company to a one of the largest commercial

development companies in the South. In 1986, when Dennis Murphree left the real estate business,

Dennis Nelson set up his own companies to continue to develop and invest in commercial real estate

projects. In 1992, The Mission Companies started to specialize and focus their efforts in the acquisition

and development of medical office buildings. Medical office buildings currently make up a significant

portion of the company’s real estate holdings and will continue to provide future growth opportunities.

Over the last couple of years the company has expanded both through acquisitions of office buildings, as

well as the development of new corporate buildings. Today the company owns &/or manages over

1,000,000 sf of medical and office buildings in the Houston area.

In addition to being involved with many industry organizations such as Urban Land Institute (ULI),

Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA), Institute for Real Estate Management (IREM);

Dennis is very active in many charitable organizations, including Coalition for the Homeless of Houston,

Houston Golf Association, St Joseph Community Development Board, West Houston Young Life

Committee, Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce and Greater Fort Bend Economic Development Council.

Dennis is also active in his church, Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, where he has served as

confirmation teacher, past chairman of the Board of Deacons, Treasurer of the Session and currently an

Elder on the Personnel Committee of Session. He is also a small group fellowship leader.
