Why This Matters
Ireland remains one of Europe’s most important data centre markets, but the rules for getting projects approved and delivered have fundamentally changed. Data centres now account for roughly 23% of Ireland’s metered electricity consumption, according to the Central Statistics Office Ireland, and that level of demand has forced a shift from broad growth to selective, infrastructure-led development.
Recent policy changes from the Commission for Regulation of Utilities require new data centre projects to align with renewable generation, provide system support and pass more granular location-based assessments. At the same time, the government’s Large Energy Users Action Plan signals that opportunities in greater Dublin are likely to be limited in the near term, pushing developers toward new geographic and energy strategies.
In response, the market is evolving quickly. Projects like Equinix’s DB7x are maximizing existing power allocations within Dublin, while Vantage’s DUB1 campus incorporates large-scale onsite generation. Echelon’s DUB20 in Arklow is advancing a green energy park model tied to offshore wind, representing a new framework for delivering capacity in Ireland. These changes represent a shift in how projects are conceived, financed and executed.
