Henry Ford Hospital

Jerry V. Darby, MBA, serves as the Vice President, Campus Planning, Development and Design for Henry Ford Hospital. He leads the system level planning and facility department for Henry Ford Health System as well as all planning and implementation of the Henry Ford Hospital Campus development plan. The campus planning includes the redevelopment of Henry Ford Hospital, academic campus development for the Henry Ford Health + Michigan State University Health Sciences partnership, and other projects associated with partnerships on the Henry Ford Hospital campus.

With over 30 years of experience as a management consulting leader in the health care industry, Jerry has planned, developed, and activated more than 30 million square feet of space during his career and has worked with nearly all of the top 20 US News & World Report Best Hospitals.

Most recently, Jerry was the Vice President of strategic advisory services at Covalus, LLC where he served healthcare clients in Michigan, Georgia and Colorado with their strategic facility planning needs.

He has also held several roles at Kurt Salmon Healthcare Consulting Group, including leading the business advisory group. During his 18 years at Kurt Salmon, Jerry led the facilities, operations, and IT groups, and managed the international group with a specific focus on the healthcare markets in the GCC.

Jerry is a graduate of the Global Senior Management Program through a joint program with the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and IE Business School in Madrid, Spain. He also has a Master of Business Administration in Finance from the University of Iowa and a Bachelor of Arts in Pharmacy from Ferris State University.

Richard Temple

Dick Temple is a licensed Architect. He currently leads the University’s facility planning with

strategic partners. His previous role at Michigan State University was Assistant Vice President

for Real Estate and Capital Planning Dick’s background includes 30 years in the private sector

as an Architect, a Construction Manager, and a Real Estate Broker. He applies his expertise

and experience to help move forward both on-campus and off-campus initiatives. These have

included community integrated planning with traditional construction delivery methods and non-

traditional construction delivery strategies and ownership models.

He received a Bachelors in Business Administration and Masters in Architecture from the

University of Texas in Austin. He has worked and taught in Germany and has completed

projects in England and China.

Michael Poris, AIA, is founding principal of McIntosh Poris Architects, a full-service architecture, interior and urban design practice in Birmingham, MI. Since returning to Detroit in 1994, Michael has been working to implement change in his hometown preserving many of Detroit’s 20th-century landmark buildings, historic districts, and iconic neighborhoods. Michaels design leadership has helped transform Detroit with projects such as the Foundation Hotel, and the East Riverfront framework plan. His work has won over 160 design awards including 30 AIA Honor awards, over 80 Detroit Design Awards and been published in over 100 publications worldwide including Dwell, Urban Land, Architectural Record, and Interior Design. Michael is currently working on an adaptive reuse of the 600,000sf Fisher Body plant in Detroit, and a 600 prefabricated home community in Colorado.

Michael was recently awarded the AIA Detroit Charles Blessing Award recognizing an individual who shows leadership in planning and civic issues and exemplifies the vision, commitment and the accomplishments of Charles A. Blessing, the visionary Detroit city planner, who committed himself to the pursuit of a higher quality of life for all. McIntosh Poris Architects has recently earned the prestigious title of Firm of the Year for 2024 from the American Institute of Architects, Michigan.

Jeff brings over thirty years of experience leading integrated design teams in the execution of

technically sophisticated commercial and institutional projects over a range of markets. Jeff

directs HED’s national architectural design and planning disciplines and oversees complex

multidiscipline design efforts, ensuring quality and leading commitment to the daily practice of

HED’s core values of integrated practice, critical thinking, and design excellence.

Prior to joining HED, Jeff was a Principal and Board member at Albert Kahn Associates, Inc. in

Detroit, MI, where he led the architectural and planning discipline teams and oversaw the

sustainable design commitment of the office. An energetic advocate and leader in the A/E

community, he serves as an active member of the City of Northville Planning and Historic

District Commissions. He is also the Vice President of the Detroit Chapter of the American

Institute of Architects, is active with the Michigan Chapter of the American Planning Association,

and the Detroit Regional Chapter of the U. S. Green Building Council (where he previously

served as Chair of the Board of Directors).

Jeff’s command of client-focused leadership and exhaustive experience overseeing technical

and creative excellence in the practice of architecture is integral to HED’s effectiveness toward

Alejandro is a Vice Principal at Thornton Tomasetti, where he leads the structural design efforts of complex, multidisciplinary projects. His expertise lies in tall buildings and special structures in the U.S. and abroad. Recently, he has been focusing on the use of mass timber as a construction material and has been involved in several notable timber projects in the United States including Ascent, currently the tallest mass timber structure in the world, and The Edison, which is on track to be the tallest timber building in the world by 2027.

Alejandro uses traditional materials to develop engineering systems tailored to the opportunities and constraints of timber construction. Some of his notable work includes Al Wasl Plaza in Dubai, UAE, and Tom Lee Park in Nashville, Tennessee. He is currently working on Detroit’s new Music Hall for the Performing Arts.

Mark is a real estate developer, financier and attorney with 30+ years of experience in

envisioning, structuring and executing complex and transformative market rate and

affordable multifamily and mixed-use developments. Since 2014, he has taken part in

the development and financing of 9 ground-up, existing and major rehab developments

including 2,000+ residential units with 7 developments in the City of Detroit. Combined

capital stacks exceed $300 million including 4 Qualified Opportunity Zone Funds (QOF),

and the first one in Detroit. Mark is an expert in creating non-profit Community Land

Trusts (CLTs), an innovative means of developing permanent affordable housing, with

six such developments underway in the City of Detroit. In law school, Mark founded

Toxicheck, later merging with Environmental Data Resources Inc. (EDR), today the

nation’s leading environmental information services company. Mark is a Member of the

State Bar of Michigan and practiced law at Miller Canfield, creating the firm’s Climate

Change Practice Group. He earned his BS in Economics, Phi Beta Kappa from

Michigan State University, and his JD from the Wayne State University Law School.

Some of the more notable projects Derek has worked on include the redeveloped Hudson’s Site, Rocket Mortgage headquarters, Ford Field and the Gordie Howe International Bridge.

Alicia is a Studio Director and Project Director with 18 years of experience designing and delivering mixed-use projects in urban environments. This has allowed her to lead multidisciplinary teams through all phases of a project, utilizing her technical expertise in complex buildings with her holistic design and construction perspective. A key focus of her role across architecture and interiors projects is creating efficiency with the right team and resources to achieve the best design and delivery for our clients.

Alicia is a Detroit native who has worked across the globe, spending close to two decades in London where she completed projects throughout the UK, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. She brings her experiences in historically rich cities across the world back to Detroit, where she now supports neighborhood improvement and urban revitalization, making lasting contributions through the power of design.
