As Executive Vice President and Regional Manager of McShane Construction Company's Rosemont office, Mat oversees the day-to-day operations of the firm's headquarters and is a pivotal team member in the strategic planning process.

He contributes 18 years of construction experience at the McShane organization with a focus on multi-family residential and the commercial construction markets.

Mat establishes and maintains many of the firm’s relationships with clients, real estate developers and the brokerage community as well as governmental officials, architects and other affiliated industry representatives. John Russell

John Russell is President of W.E. O’Neil’s Chicago and Austin regions and has been with the company throughout his entire career, beginning as a Project Engineer and progressing through the ranks over the last 40 years. He assumed leadership of the Chicago region in 2018 and has worked to deliver on W.E. O’Neil’s mission of bringing thoughtful leadership to the building experience through his collaborative personality. His strong management skills and operations background make him an excellent leader and a trusted business partner in real estate development, design, and construction industry.

John is passionate about promoting diversity and inclusion in the construction industry and is active in various community workforce development initiatives on the south and west sides of Chicago. He is also a founding member of HIRE 360, Chicago’s leading workforce development organization.

In addition to his support of diversity and inclusion in the construction industry, John is an active member and former Chairman of the Chicago Builders’ Association, and is involved with the American Institute of Architects, the Lean Construction Institute, Chicago Architecture Foundation, as well as several organizations near W.E. Represents short-listed developers and design-build joint ventures responding to P3 solicitations on the Illiana Expressway, I-69 Section 5, the Indianapolis Justice Center and other P3 transactions.

Lead counsel representing an Illinois municipality during procurement of design-build services for ultra-violet water treatment systems.

Lead counsel in arbitration of claims arising out of an EPC contract to design and construct multiple frac-sand processing facilities.

Lead counsel representing private water utility in development of integrated design procurement and contract documents for the design and construction of a new ground water treatment plant.

Bob Flannery serves as Chief Operating Officer at CA Ventures with a focus on CA’s national multifamily development platform, along with involvement in CA’s strategic planning, acquisitions, capital markets and asset management activities. Bob is also active in decisions regarding the holding, selling, repositioning and refinancing of CA assets.

Prior to joining CA Ventures, Bob was Chief Operating Officer at JRG Capital Partners and Chief Financial Officer at Jameson Real Estate, an affiliated company of JRG.

Bob has over 25 years of experience in commercial real estate and executive leadership. He has worked for many of the industry’s top firms, including Prudential Insurance, JP Morgan Chase and Sam Zell’s Equity Office. He has been involved in transactions totaling over $2 billion and has managed real estate portfolios consisting of office, retail industrial and multifamily in major markets throughout the United States.

Bob holds a BS in Finance from Northern Illinois University and an MBA in International Business from Wayne State University.

J. Michael Drew

Structured Development

As a founding principal of Structured Development, LLC, J. Michael Drew has been engaged in the real estate development and construction management business for nearly 40 years. Michael matriculated at the University of Illinois where he studied Business Administration and Architecture. Over 25 years as a general contractor, Michael has had extensive experience in all phases of the construction process, especially scheduling of labor forces and subcontractors and comparative purchasing of material and equipment. Notable projects completed include City Hall Lobby and Entrance Renovations, Marshall Field and State of Illinois Pedways, Clark Lake and Roosevelt Subway Stations, McCormick Place Expansion, and numerous utility tunnel installations. He was an active participant in the conversion and renovation of obsolete loft buildings to commercial and residential reuse throughout the City, including Riverworks on Goose Island, Lincoln Lofts in Lakeview, 1415 Dayton and 1333 Kingsbury in the Halsted Triangle. During his tenure as a principal of Structured Development, the firm completed over 2,000,000 square feet of product including Lincoln Park Center, Blackhawk on Halsted, Kingsbury Center, and Kendall College at Riverworks. Structured Development is the Managing Partner on the “nationally significant” New City mixed use project. Structured was awarded the Adaptive Reuse Project of 2008 by the Landmark Preservation Council for its historic conversion of the Chicago and Northwestern Powerhouse to office and retail.

Michael represented the Builders Association of Greater Chicago on the City’s Minority Relations Committee, served on the recent Land Use Task Force Committee, and is a long term member of the International Council of Shopping Centers, Urban Land Institute, and Lambda Alpha International. He is a 20 year member of World Presidents Organization, and a past President of Olympia Fields Country Club. Michael has served on the Advisory Board for the Marshall Bennett Institute of Real Estate at Roosevelt University for over a decade.

Ray Lang serves as the Senior Director of Amtrak’s National State Relations. He is also President of The Chicago Union Station Company, a wholly-owned Amtrak subsidiary. In his role as President of the property, Lang represents Amtrak and the station to City, State and Regional governmental entities. He serve as a liaison to the primary tenant in the building, Metra and work collaboratively with the many stakeholder groups in the Chicago region to make policy decisions that will help the station meet the changing transportation needs of the region.

Mitch Carrel is a Partner in the Real Estate Practice Group.

His practice focuses on representing public and private companies, land owners, developers and investors and helping them secure land use and zoning approvals, public incentives, local regulatory and siting approvals, as well as performing zoning due diligence. Among Mitch's projects, he has helped obtain approvals for the siting of wireless communications facilities and written about the process from siting to completion. He also represents clients before local plan commissions, zoning boards and city councils. Before joining Freeborn, Mitch was a shareholder and led the Land Use Group at Vedder Price PC in Chicago.

As a member of the both the Food and Transportation Teams, Mitch helps companies in these industries secure land use and zoning approvals, public incentives, and local regulatory and siting approvals.

Land use and zoning approvals for a 53-story, mixed-use, high-rise building in Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood.

Land use and related approvals for a 40-story mixed use, office, retail and residential building on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile.

Oversight of zoning, entitlements, and street vacation matters to ensure rail operations were not impeded or negatively impacted, as part of a sale of air rights over existing rail operations, allowing for a 750-foot tall office building to be constructed in downtown Chicago.

Land use, street vacations and related approvals for numerous market rate and affordable senior housing developments including assisted living facilities, supportive living facilities, and memory care facilities in Chicago and the Chicago suburbs.

Land use and zoning due diligence in connection with the acquisition of an approximately $112 million 27-story, Class A mixed-use office building in Chicago’s Central Business District.

Land use and related diligence to assist a joint venture partner in connection with proposals for a 2,000-foot tall, $1.5 billion project in Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood.

Land use, financial incentives, fiber optic conduit path use agreements and other approvals in connection with data centers in downtown Chicago.

Land use and related approvals for a youth sports academy sponsored by two major Chicago sports team in the Chicago suburbs.

Conduit Path and Facility Use Agreement with the City of Chicago for a data center project.

Land use and public way waivers and approvals for high rise, mixed use projects on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile.

Land use approvals for an approximately 400,000 square foot manufacturing facility in the western suburbs of Chicago.

Land use, public way and related approvals for numerous hospital expansions in Chicago.

Public way approvals for numerous high rise buildings in downtown Chicago.
