CBRE, Savills Launch Thompson Center Leasing As 2,000 Google Employees Prepare For Move-In
Google's long-awaited move to the renovated Thompson Center in the Central Loop is finally crystallizing, with the tech giant tapping top brokerages to oversee office and retail leasing as it readies to set up shop in the building in 2027.
Google is handing over its office leasing to CBRE and its retail leasing to Savills. Earlier this week, it launched a new website for the building with renderings and detailed space offerings.
Fourteen retail spaces totaling 60K SF are available, Block Club Chicago reported, while CBRE did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the amount of available office space.
The tech company expects interior construction to continue into 2027 and plans to move about 2,000 employees into its Chicago headquarters at 100 W. Randolph St. later that year, according to the outlet. The building will mostly retain its name as the shortened Thompson Center, a slight change from its former name, the James R. Thompson Center.
Construction began in May 2024, and redevelopment of the building's exterior entered the final stages in February. A joint venture of The Prime Group and Capri Investment Group has been redeveloping the building, which formerly housed government offices.
The project, thought of by many in CRE as a potential catalyst for the revival of activity in the Loop, has been a long time coming. Google announced plans to buy the 1.2M SF building designed by famed architect Helmut Jahn for $105M in July 2022, pending the completion of renovations.
"The Google employees who will call this building home will be another piece in the complex, thriving puzzle of the Loop’s infrastructure and ecosystem, making our economy and our skyline stronger," Gov. J.B. Pritzker said when the project launched in 2024.
