A former Kmart space that became vacant during the parent company's ongoing string of store closures appears to have found a new tenant.

Giant Food has filed permits to open in the former Kmart space at 6364 Springfield Plaza in Springfield, Virginia, the Washington Business Journal reports

The building, owned by Finmarc Management, was constructed in 1980. Kmart closed late last year and was temporarily filled with a Halloween pop-up shop this year. Giant plans to take the majority of the 76K SF space but leave about 10K SF available for other tenants.

The retail space is part of the Springfield Plaza shopping center, which already includes a 48K SF Giant store. It remains to be seen what will happen to the space Giant currently occupies.

The shopping center, managed by Rappaport, also includes a Trader Joe's, Buy Buy Baby, Chipotle, Starbucks and Potbelly Sandwich Shop. It sits about one mile south of the interchange of the Beltway and Interstate 395.

Sears and Kmart stores have continued to close this year following Sears' October 2018 bankruptcy filing. The latest round of 96 closures announced last week included two D.C.-area stores in Manassas and Hyattsville, Maryland.
