As the National Science Foundation prepares to move out of Ballston's Stafford Place to its new HQ in Alexandria, the complex's owner is planning a major renovation.

Jamestown, which bought Stafford Place I and II in 2015 for a combined $300M, is launching a $140M renovation and rebranding effort on the property.

The two trophy buildings, at 4201 and 4121 Wilson Blvd., will be renamed Ballston Exchange. The buildings total 776k SF of office and retail space and are connected with a pedestrian bridge.

Jamestown is planning to remodel the 12-story atrium at 4201 Wilson and reposition the outdoor retail space with a two-story façade. The renovations are expected to begin in late 2017 after NSF moves out and are slated to deliver in late 2018.

The building sits across the street from Ballston Common Mall, for which Forest City is under construction on a $350M redevelopment and rebranding as Ballston Quarter
