Edens Plans Theater and Residential/Office for Union Market

In a 5-0 vote, the DC Zoning Commission approved the addition of a movie theater and apartments to Union Market, as the beginning of a significant evolution. The vote comes after developer Edens agreed to manage the park and the plaza for the life of the project and move the iconic Union Market sign from the new roof to the theater level. The project will top the existing 62,423 SF market with a 42K SF Angelika Film Center and four stories (112K SF) of residential or office space, the Washington Business Journal reports. Later, Edens will replace a warehouse at 1329 Fifth St NE with the North Building, a 350K SF mixed-use building featuring retail, entertainment, and either residential or office space. The film center is committed to open on Sept. 1, 2016, and Union Market will remain open during construction. [WBJ]
