Inova to Deliver Region’s Largest Women’s Hospital

By the end of January, the DC region will have the largest women’s hospital in the Mid-Atlantic at 660k SF and the hottest healthcare amenities, driven largely by Millennials. We’re excited to present all the project details at Bisnow’s DC Regional Healthcare event on Nov. 12 at the Grand Hyatt Washington, starting at 8am.

Among our speakers, Inova VP Patricia Byrnes Schmehl (middle) tells us that after three years of construction, Inova’s Women’s Hospital is set to open in late January with 192 beds on 11 stories at its Fairfax campus. The new hospital, which will include two and a half floors for pediatrics, will feature several new healthcare trends, including lounge areas on the patient floors with tech services and food options for patients and their families. Previously, patients and families were sent to a stark lobby on the ground floor to take a break from their rooms, Patricia says.

Another healthcare trend is being able to offer patients pre-eminent rooms, says Patricia. The new Women’s Hospital will have four larger suites on five of the hospital's floors. They'll include an enhanced bedroom and dedicated family space, along with quality linens and towels. Patients can also order celebratory meals and afternoon tea for additional fees. The $400M project is not only going to be the largest hospital dedicated to women, it’s also the largest building project so far for Inova, which has been providing women’s health services at its main Fairfax Hospital for over 50 years, ranking it among the top 10 most active in the country with 9,000 births per year.

Another new feature will be this outdoor healing garden. Patricia says the design trends are being driven by physicians, staff and hospital leaders, many of whom are Millennials. Focus groups have also been held to receive feedback on amenities for obstetrics patients, with 65% of the focus group participants being Millennials. Patricia says this generation has significant expectations for their hospital experience. And hospitals are increasingly under pressure to reduce patient stays, which means patient anxiety has to be low so recovery is quicker.
