DC Construction Slows in 2015

2014 was a good year for construction, with job growth in 40 states and DC. However, numbers from Dodge Data & Analytics are revealing a different story for Washington, Arlington and Alexandria in 2015. Total construction starts are down 24% from January 2014, with nonresidential building at $223M compared to last year’s $285M; and residential building at $359M to 2014’s $478M. Meanwhile, the nation as a whole has seen construction starts climb 9% in January. Is this a sign of a slowing DC economy while the rest of America recovers? Or is this just a side effect of a cold January? With just one month down, the jury’s still out on whether this is just a glitch, or a trend.
