After a $38M renovation, San Francisco's Vantaggio building in Union Square has taken on a boutique hotel feel as it reopens as the Courtyard San Francisco Union Square Hotel.

Purchased by RLJ Lodging Trust for $56.5M in 2013, the 1929 building had most recently been a 150-room student housing facility. The renovation resulted in a 166-room Courtyard by Marriott.

Studio HBA, which led the renovation, used the high ceilings and Art Deco details of the building while adding modern touches and technology, according to the San Francisco Business Times. The goal was to create a hotel that had the look and feel of a luxury boutique hotel, but with the amenities of a Courtyard Marriott, says Studio HBA principal David Dunphy. [SFBT]
