Office conversions now account for 47% of future adaptive reuse projects nationwide, according to a new RentCafe report. 
The number of units underway at the start of 2026 was almost four times the roughly 23,000 units being converted in 2022.

Those artists likely couldn’t afford to live in the neighborhood today. In their place, a new generation of well-heeled celebrities has moved in — and some are now fighting new housing that would include affordable units. Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Edward Norton and Rachel Maddow are among those using historic status to prevent a surface parking lot in the neighborhood from being developed as a high-rise.
