<content:encoded><![CDATA[The government's latest attempt to rewrite apartment design standards has drawn an immediate response from developers, housing advocates and opposition politicians, after the state launched its draft planning framework while simultaneously defending its existing guidelines in the High Court.
Housing Minister James Browne launched the public consultation on the Draft National Planning Statement on Planning Design Standards for Apartments 2026, which would replace the controversial apartment guidelines introduced last year.
The draft has set out national standards covering apartment sizes, unit mix, dual-aspect requirements, floor-to-ceiling heights, storage provision, stair and lift core ratios and amenity spaces.

The pipeline of new construction of the city’s big-box spaces, defined as modern distribution facilities 200K SF and larger with clear heights of at least 28 feet, hit 18 projects by the end of March, according to a Q1 report from Colliers. The pipeline totaled 10.2M SF, with 10 build-to-suit developments totaling 7.2M SF and eight speculative projects totaling 3M SF.

<content:encoded><![CDATA[The Department of Housing and Urban Development announced Thursday that it was cutting off a major source of funding to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, the embattled joint city and county agency. 
The suspension of funds is pending an investigation launched by HUD’s Office of Inspector General into whether LAHSA violated federal laws, according to a letter HUD sent to LAHSA’s CEO on Thursday.

<content:encoded><![CDATA[Developers are chasing resurgent economic vitality in Eastern Pennsylvania’s midsized post-industrial cities, and some believe Reading is next in line.
The city suffered in the 1980s from deindustrialization and job losses in its once-strong banking sector, and by 2011, it had become the poorest small city in the nation with a 41.3% poverty rate.
That metric has since fallen to 28.7%, and its population has grown from 88,000 in 2010 to 96,000 last year, U.S. Census Data shows.
But development hasn’t kept up with that growth: Last month, Reading officials reported that the city has a housing shortage of 5,000 units.

<content:encoded><![CDATA[Federal officials arrested Orange County investor and financier Mahender Makhijani on Wednesday on charges that he defrauded a bank of nearly $100M. 
Makhijani allegedly manipulated title policies, inflating the value of collateral pledged for loans he had with the bank, according to a federal complaint. Although the bank is not named in the complaint, court filings show it is Western Alliance Bank. Western Alliance has a pending case against Makhijani in Los Angeles County Superior Court. 
Makhijani and Continuum Analytics were also named as respondents in an arbitration that earlier this week found he defrauded a business associate and ordered him to pay $1.34B.
