Costa Mesa City Council Has Reservations About Parking At Proposed Development

Before plans move forward for a mixed-use project in the SoBeca District, Costa Mesa's LAB Holdings must first work out issues involving parking, the Costa Mesa City Council decided last week.

The city council said the developer needs to come up with a plan, along with the city and area neighbors, to move some proposed parking spaces from streets in the neighborhood.

As part of the development called The Plant, four buildings would be renovated into retail and restaurants, adding 10k SF of retail and office on 2.2 acres at 769 Baker St and 2972 Century Place.

A two-story building with six units and a four-story building with 45 apartments would also be built, the Orange County Register reports.

City zoning requires 208 parking spaces. LAB Holdings proposed 216, which would include 33 on-street parking spaces on Century Place.

Since Costa Mesa has never allowed street parking to meet parking requirements, the developer had asked for an exemption to the policy. [OCR]
