The Oakland A’s plan to build a ballpark near Laney College has hit a significant snag. The Peralta Community College District board of trustees ordered Chancellor Jowel Laguerre on Tuesday to stop discussions with the Oakland A’s, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The ballpark plan, despite widespread support in the city, has received significant pushback from Laney College students and faculty. Opposition groups have cited traffic, construction, noise and gentrification as reasons why the ballpark should not be next to the college.

The plan would involve developing a $500M ballpark near Eighth Street and Fifth Avenue. Peralta Community College District’s offices are currently on the land that would be redeveloped. The A’s also plan to build housing and commercial on eight acres that are used as a parking lot for the college.
