Gary Rappaport, Tom Bozzuto, Wendy Feldman Block And More On The Breakthrough Moment In Their Careers

Future Of Bethesda & Beyond: An in-depth discussion of Wheaton, Rockville, Silver Spring and More | July 16

Building a successful career in  commercial real estate is not easy. Going from a young, inexperienced developer or broker to a leading figure in the industry does not happen overnight.

But most industry leaders can remember a moment when they knew they had made it, a breakthrough in their career that gave them confidence in their future success. From the first pool of investment partners for an acquisition to selling condos at the height of the Great Recession, many of today's D.C. real estate leaders can point to pivotal moments that helped elevate their career to the next level.

Bisnow asked several top developers and brokers, who will speak at Bisnow's How To Make It In Commercial Real Estate event June 12 in D.C., to describe a moment in their career when they knew they had made it. Here are their answers:

I think the acquisition that confirmed to me that I could have a seller consider me a bona fide buyer, that a lender could accept me as a borrower — especially on a nonrecourse loan — as someone who will perform as promised, and that investors believed in me and would…

Last month, Amazon reported strong first-quarter returns, with total revenue up 16.9% year over year. Now other retailers are releasing earnings reports, and the picture for them is mixed or even bad, though at least they say they aren't being impacted adversely by tariffs on Chinese goods.

ICSC RECon: Can Immersive Technology Save Brick-And-Mortar Retail?

Imagine walking into a store, its shelves empty. But through an app on your phone, you could see several products virtually come to life as if you were looking through the aisles of a traditional retail store.

Three-dimensional racks of clothes pop into existence. Wave your phone over another area and a computer-generated box of Tide laundry detergent appears on the floor. Wave it over a different area and other products come into sight.

Click on the products and it can take you to a website where you place items in a shopping cart. Upon checkout, the items can either be delivered to your home or bagged and waiting as you exit the store.

This is just one of many examples of the possibilities of augmented reality, or AR, in the retail space.

Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones: CRE Is A Contact Sport, So Football Players Fit Right In

The Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones and 91 acres of vibrant mixed-use real estate. What more can one development ask for? Dr Pepper, of course.

Developed by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and the city of Frisco, The Star in Frisco is the world headquarters of America's team. Thursday it broke ground on a new headquarters for Keurig Dr Pepper.

The Star also is a type of commercial real estate mecca for Cowboys. It is already home to commercial real estate firm ESRP, which formerly was associated with Hall of Fame Cowboys player Emmitt Smith, and is the current employer of retired Cowboys player Darren Woodson

Beyond the direct connection to The Star, when Cowboys retire, they seem to end up in commercial real estate. There's Roger Staubach, of course, and even Tony Romo headlined the International Council of Shopping Centers' big conference this week.

So is Jones recruiting them?
