The Silent Killer On The Job Site: Inside Construction's Battle With Opioids

The American opioid crisis was declared a national public health emergency Thursday, but the U.S. construction industry does not seem ready to take action regarding its own significant role in the deadly epidemic.

The trillion-dollar industry has been hit harder than almost any other sector of the economy in a health crisis that takes nearly 100 American lives each day. But it has been largely silent, more concerned about perception than the number of workers who are addicted to opioids.

Workplace Trends Are Changing, Part 2: Mobility And Wellness Are Key

Though convenience and flexibility are still king in office design, an emphasis on health and wellness now reigns as a focal point for employee well-being.

The design shift in favor of health and wellness has led owners to incorporate fewer support spaces for print rooms and supply closets in order to encourage employee mobility. Technology options on laptops allow employees to print from anywhere in the office.

Printers themselves are down to one for every 73 people, and the number of pantries has declined to one for every 112 people. They are being replaced by more central cafés that are meant to encourage more frequent interaction and engagement between employees.

CoStar Goes Further Into Attack Mode After Xceligent Shakeup

In the hours after Xceligent parted ways with founder and longtime CEO Doug Curry, CoStar — the $9B data giant, dominant commercial real estate data figure and Xceligent's legal adversary — went on a marketing blitz.

Rather than tell customers about a new product or program, CoStar sent electronic messages late Tuesday night, and print materials Wednesday morning, highlighting its case that Xceligent is stealing its intellectual property, making claims around Curry's exit Xceligent representatives said are "patently false."
