Despite a housing shortage in Los Angeles and throughout California, city of El Segundo officials said the city is not ready for more housing.

El Segundo City Manager Greg Carpenter said there has been a lot of interest from the development community to build housing or mixed-use projects with residential components in the city.

Some residents have also been asking for the city to bring in more housing for their family members, he said during Bisnow's Future of South Bay event. El Segundo is one of many cities across the state that have not met the…

Why The Culture Of Finance Is More Inclusive For Women In Commercial Real Estate

Again and again, women in commercial real estate have been pushed aside, ignored, discouraged, maligned or worse. In the midst of the global #MeToo movement, those struggles — namely equal pay, equal treatment and equal opportunity — have emphatically risen to the surface to force the industry to chart a new, more inclusive course. But change can take time.

Yet in one critical corner of real estate change has already begun: Women now account for an estimated 34% of all financial service positions in the commercial real estate industry. That makes it the second-largest specialization for women in the industry behind asset management — just ahead of development and brokerage services, according to the latest CREW survey.

That is far from equal, but given the truism that commercial real estate is male-dominated, real estate finance now represents one of the largest and fastest-growing sectors for women in all of commercial real estate — and that is because there is a more natural education path for women that leads to financial service positions.

Drivers, Warehouse Workers To Picket Ports Of Long Beach And Los Angeles

Claiming wage theft and other labor abuses, Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach truck drivers and warehouse workers are staging a three-day strike at the ports and other areas in Greater Los Angeles and the Inland Empire starting Monday.

The local Teamsters unions are targeting XPO Logistics and NFI Industries for what union officials say are the industrial giants' misclassification of drivers as independent contractors.

“Port drivers and warehouse workers at the gateway of the U.S. supply chain will carry out a series of escalating strikes and actions to build worker power and expose a crooked industry that has been built on exploitation, wage theft,…

Report: Poll Finds Nearly Half Of Voters Oppose Prop. 10 Expanding Rent Control

If the California elections were held today, nearly half of likely voters would vote against Proposition 10, the repeal of the Costa-Hawkins Rental Housing Act, according to a poll by the Public Policy Institute of California. The passage of Prop. 10 would expand local authority to enact rent control across the state.

The survey released last week found 48% of likely voters would vote against repealing Costa-Hawkins; 36% would vote yes and 16% are undecided. The Public Policy Institute of California is a nonprofit, nonpartisan think tank.  The nonprofit surveyed more than…

Blockchain Technology Could Change The Subcontractor Relationship In Construction

Blockchain technology holds the potential to change how builders hire and pay subcontractors and suppliers, but the how of the technology is less important than why it is needed in the industry, says the founder of BuilderChain, a company setting out to drive some of that change.

Dan Bowden, who has decades of experience in the homebuilding space, has set out to bring blockchain technology — the use of distributed, secure information and validation through a public record or "ledger" — to companies looking to better streamline the process.

That could mean getting the right subcontractors on a job quickly or expediting how those subcontractors or suppliers are paid. While he plans to start with small homebuilders, Bowden said the technology has potential to create a faster, better system for larger companies in both the residential space and in commercial real estate construction.

The 6 Best North American Movie Theater Chains

Retail landlords are increasingly turning to experiential retail tenants like movie theaters to drive traffic, but not all movie theaters are created equal.

The movie theaters of 2018 have amenities like reclining chairs, on-demand meals and cocktail bars, but how much of that really matters to customers? Market Force Information polled nearly 13,000 North American consumers about their moviegoing habits. From competitive ticket prices and comfortable seating to gourmet food options, patron responses determined the rankings.

Here are the top six chains based on those responses:

1. Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas This Austin, Texas-based theater chain is a moviegoer favorite thanks to its strictly enforced rules. When this company says no talking or texting, they mean it. First-time offenders get a warning, and if they continue, they are…
