Gusto, an employee benefits company, has moved into its new 50K SF office at Historic Pier 70, which was redeveloped by Orton Development. The Gensler-designed office at 113 20th St. was built inside a former machine shop and features an open office floor plan, a 40-foot mural that employees painted and shoes are not allowed.

Gusto employees were involved during each stage of the office build-out, and the company used virtual reality to provide a preview for current and future employees to tour before move in.

Employees, business partners and guests leave their shoes in cubbies before they enter the shoeless office.

The office includes a living wall provided by Emeryville-based Planted Design, also a Gusto customer.

Gusto kept the gantry cranes and driver cabs of the former Union Iron Works machine shop, which repaired ships as early as the 19th Century.

Gusto maintained the machine shop's original pipes, beams and roofing above its modern furnishings.

Gusto's conference rooms are designed to look like shipping containers to pay homage to the building's history.

Conference room names are inspired by Gusto's more than 60,000 small business customers.

Communal spaces are scattered throughout the office to encourage spontaneous collaboration spaces or quiet places to work.

Gusto's central space is refered to as the living room. Employees can work and relax on the couches and lounge chairs surrounding coffee tables.

Gusto co-founder and CEO Josh Reeves paints part of the 40-foot long mural that decorates the office's all-hands space where the company hold meetings. The mural, which dozens of employees painted, showcases the different types of small businesses the company serves.
