Amazon has announced official plans to build a fulfillment center in Staten Island, the first in New York State.

The facility will be 855K SF, a bit smaller than initial reports of a 975K SF building. Amazon claims it will have 2,250 full-time employees, who will work alongside automated systems as part of the Amazon Robotics program, according to a press release. The facility will be developed by Matrix Development Group, which also owns the land on which it will be built.

“We’ve been talking about the West Shore of Staten Island as our borough’s ‘Jobs Coast,’ and today that talk becomes reality in a big way,” Staten Island Borough President James Oddo said. "In fact, this project will be the biggest single job creator in our borough’s history."

The fulfillment center is Amazon's first in New York, but two smaller facilities for the e-commerce giant's Prime Now service are already operational in New York — one in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn. Amazon also opened a 141K SF distribution center for food deliveries in Bethpage on Long Island last year.
