NYC Looking For Developers To Build A Film Studio In Sunset Park
The city is on the hunt for a developer to build a film and television studio on a 200K SF waterfront site in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood.
The New York City Economic Development Corp. and the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment have issued a request for proposals, the city announced this week.
The agency is looking for a developer to build at the Made in New York campus at Bush Terminal. The campus already has 500 workers there and will have around 1,500 people in 2020.
The city will give preference to proposals that advance gender equity within the media industry.
"New York City’s film and TV sector draws talent from around the world — and creates thousands of good-paying jobs here across the boroughs,” Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen said in the release. “We’re making sure that this campus will provide opportunities for everyone by requiring that proposals focus on local hiring, gender equity, and promoting diversity and inclusion.”
Interested parties can tour the site on Aug. 15, and proposals are due by Nov. 2.
Brooklyn has increasingly become an alternative to Manhattan for smaller, creative companies, although many major firms balk at the idea of leaving Manhattan.
At the nearby Industry City, there has been significant interest from creative startups. Production company Buck, for example, is taking 30K SF there. The 10-year lease is for the fifth and sixth floors of Building 5, and asking rents range from the high $30s to the low $40s per SF.
