Report: Better Energy Benchmarking Needed For Multifamily

Multifamily represents 12% of the total US residential stock, or 18.5 million households, a figure that’ll only grow as Millennials and empty nesters alike choose urban density over the burbs.

But the inefficiency of multifamily buildings is preventing owners and managers from reaping a “wide range” of economic and environmental benefits, according to a new report from the Institute for Market Transformation. While upgrades could improve efficiency by up to 30%, or $3.4B in annual savings nationwide, IMT found the multifamily sector "underuses" building performance data, which is still in its infancy in catalyzing efficiency investments.
